Default Very late alert doesn't inspire confidence

I was on a highway driving 5 over the 70 limit at night with a pack of cars in front. My V1 was set on the "big L" mode. I suddenly saw a bunch of cop cars in front with party lights on as a car fell into the ditch and was awaiting rescue. The V1 didn't go off until I was almost parallel to the cop cars. It then went off like a Christmas tree with the arrow pointing backwards (K or Ka) after I passed the cop cars and stayed that way for next mile or two. Why the V1 didn't give any warning on approach? This kind of detection performance doesn't inspire confidence.

That is very normal, K is somewhat directional and Ka is very directional,
that is called a forward facing radar experience, LEO shooting forward you are behind him all you get is his bounce back from objects in front of the LEO vehicle.

You are still trying to make this thing a cop detector, it's not, it's a radar detector.

You can't expect miles and miles of range if the radar gun pointed the OPPOSITE way. Remember, the V1 is only a tool. You have to be alert, focused and use some common sense. If you see a LEO on the side of the road, it doesn't matter or not if the V1 alerts -- Slow Down! The only true cop detectors are your very own eyes.

Good luck getting a warning with any detector if you are out in the middle of nowhere and there is nothing for the signal to bounce off of.

Actually, you're wrong. I know what you mean, but if the gun is pointed opposite way, that means it's pointed at you. You should get a helluva alert time. When it's pointed same direction than you will expect less desirable results.

Have you done any programming to your unit? You should have been able to tell if it was K or Ka by the audio allert. If it was K band, and you have it in big L mode, you may have been automuting the alert. If it was Ka, however, there would be no automuting. Refer to the GOL test were they did a forward facing comparison.

Just to be safe, don't use L mode if you want prompt alerts. I think by default, it doesn't start alerting to K-band until the signal breaks the 4 LED threshold. For Michigan, I always use small L mode. By default, it starts alerting at the muted volume until it breaks the 4 LED threshold (then it goes full blast).
