I wanted the best. I wanted something that would have good radar performance, particularly Ka. I had always heard the Valentine was one of the best, so I thought I'd look at it. I was debating between that and the X50. When I saw the V1, I made my decision. With as good of radar performance as the X50, plus the arrows, my mind was made up. Haven't looked back since. Although I've always wanted to try an X50.

I was happy with the Escort products I'd used, and then read all of the reviews in past year's where the V1 came out on top. When I decided to get a new RD with Ka and Laser, I also wanted to get the best.

I started using a V1 in 2000 and used one for 4 yrs. I ended up getting my wife one too. In early 2004 I sold them both on Ebay while V1.8's were still the latest and greatest, in order to get the most for them, while anticipating a new model coming out. I also did this so I could buy/sell other models on Ebay in order to try them all for myself. After using just about every high end Bel and Escort I settled on the Bel 985 for my car, and my wife was using a regular 8500 until I could find another 985 for her. She eventually started complaining about missing the directional arrows, so I bought her another V1 recently. I'm still using the 985 and have no problems with it at all. I do miss the arrows / bogey counter occasionally, and the mount on it SUCKS, but the range and filtering is great. It works well enough, especially for $65 I paid for it on Ebay. When we go on road trips I take the V1 in whatever we're driving...I still prefer it over everything else, but for the money I can handle the 985 just fine, or the 940 / 960.

After trying just about everything, my conclusion was that all of the high end units detect similarly as far as range goes (I've seen k band hits right around 4 miles with all of them) and filtering is similar too. For me it just came down to bang for my buck and what other features I prefer (like AutoScan and AutoMute on the 985).

The #1 reason for me, would have to be the directional arrows. Here in Cleveland moving radar is a big big threat and so, especially at night, knowing where the radar is coming from is acritical.

I perfer the type of display/menu system the x50 has, but I need the arrows, backwards facing antenna and the excellent laser coverage.

I wish there were a detector that combined the best features of both detectors... what a wonderfull world we'd live in...

That pretty much nails it for me. I wish I had the best of all worlds as well but I am quite happy with my V1

What we should do is open a knockoff company in china, patents be dammed. I have manufacturing contacts in china, any engineers out there want in on the ground floor?

    We'll build a detector with:

    1. V1's dual antennas
    2. Escort's dotmatrix display /
    3. Dot matrix arrows ValScort
    4. Bell's voice feature
    5. Escort's automute
    6. V1's laser detection
    7. Escort Pop Detection / V1 pop quietness
    8. KU band
    9. GPS for filtering out known false locations
    10. Vascar detection (would detect strong aircraft band radios in close range).
