Default Considering a V1... need advice

Well, I am conisdering shelling out an extra 200$ for a V1 over a Whistler Pro 78 or a Bel v955. The GOL test shows that the v1's detection range is usually four times better. I also love the arrows and bogey counter. V1's laser detection is also unbeatable from what I hear, almost always alerts 100% of the time.

Opinions on shelling out the extra 200$? My main worry is Ka IO from a LEO on the opposite side of the freeway nailing me, and then pulling around to pull me over at night. Of course, I use a few rabbits, but Ka IO is still really scary. My understanding is that V1 has some very good Ka sensativity.

One more thing: My current detector (Whistler 1743d) falses quite alot in some of the areas that I drive like Westeimer (lots of auto door openers running on both X and K). I will be turning off POP and X, but will the V1 be bearable in such conditions? I hear it does not have Automute of any kind. I don't want to start shrugging of K band as a false alert in urban Houston just because I see Ka 99% of the time (Unless its Memorial Villages Police using constant on K).

    Thanks for your opinions.

I own both a Whistler XTR-690 REV C and a V1. I won't sit here and tell you that they are the same range (of course they're not) -- the V1 gets SIGNIFICANTLY greater range on all encounters. However, the XTR-690 gets plenty of range too.

That's a legit concern -- the V1 will sniff out Ka from a much greater distance and that's helpful for IO.

The V1 has some of the best filtering that I've seen. Earlier whistler models easily false to other detectors -- the V1 will NOT. Automatic door openers are really obvious to spot -- lots of bogeys on the counter, the signal strength is very weak. The V1's antenna seems to sniff out off-axis stuff a lot better, so even if a door opener is perpendicular to the road, the V1 will see it while most other detectors will not. However, this will be at a very low signal. In the case of constant-on K-band, in most cases the detector will ramp up and stay at a SOLID TONE (full strength) for more than 20 secs before I can even see the cop on the road, so it's blatantly obvious that this can't possibly be a door opener unless I'm about to crash into a store!

Ultimately, both detectors are great units. The XTR-690 is the best bang-for-the-buck on the market, while the V1 is the most sensitive, "most fun" to use unit. Is it worth that extra money? For me, a radar geek, yes it is. For the average person? nah, the XTR-690 offers plenty of protection.

    So, it's up to you

Yes the v1 Ka detection is great. Having X on in the v1 can be annoying because it picks up everything but living in NJ i have to keep it on. When you turn off X though the v1 is so quiet..also turnin off POP is a must for greatly reducing false Ka into a J out...

bottom line get a v1 and u wont regret it when u see how amazing it is

But the J-out tone is so much fun, I find myself hunting around to get one

But the actual frequency of falsing from POP ON in my experience is very low with the V1, a pleasant surprise. I've been driving around with POP ON because I wanted to see how often the thing would produce false alerts, and so far I can only think of like 3 Ka alerts that I couldn't find the source to.

DEE-DOO-DAH... I love it to! It sounds so sad... Like, "I'm sorry I scared you, next time it'll be a real alert, I promise!" I got J out the first day I got the new one. PT Cruiser **shudders** was in front of me with something mounted low on the windscreen (Probably Cobra). I get a few weak false Ka alerts from time to time, usually on the highway. It's not too bad though.

I don't know about you Jdong, but when I turn the V1 on, I watch it say P...o...P and then I say POP! Make fun of me if you want, but if you don't play with your V1 and keep it happy it might decide to J out a real alert on you...

Haha, the V1 has digital driver attitude compensation. If you treat it bad, it might just decide to randomly issue you full-strength then J'ed alerts ;-)

I'm frightened to just think about it! I'd go through so many break pads!
