Default More newbie questions: concealed display

My concealed display is on its way, to be here tomorrow. I had some questions about it:

    1) I understand that most of the space is "empty" on the inside of the box and I have seen thinned out versions, which seem to be the direction I am heading. If I simply remove the back, what can I cover the circuitry with? I have seen "epoxy coating" mentioned but can't seem to find out where to get it or how to use it? Is this just a non-conductive coating that I can spread over the back of the board?

    2) The phone jack is really the last thing that keeps the concealed display so hefty. I was thinking I would desolder it and then solder up some wires with a female RJ11 at the end of it so I could still unplug it if I wanted but I could tuck the wires away. How hard is desoldering? Is it a very small area? I have a fair amount of soldering experience but have never really done any desoldering. I know I could have ordered one thin on ebay but I really wanted to try myself. I enjoy projects

    3) Same as #2, except with the LEDs, doesn't seem that hard. Does anyone know where you can buy single 1206 SMD LEDs at a decent price

    Thanks!

I've no idea, I know that REBinc knows how to do this. REBinc? Are you there? I'm going to be ordering one of his modified units this weekend. He slims them and redoes the LEDs. I just don't have the time to figure out how to do it myself.

    1) Just make sure its not conductive, a lot of stuff will work

2)The "slim" ones on eBay only move the jack to the back, they don't delete it. I don't know how good your soldering skills are, but it is possible to just solder the wire directly onto the board. I have one like this in my car and have sold a couple of them.

    3) Unless you have an electronics surplus store around you, buying individual LEDs are expensive. If you were just to buy 12 it would cost you about $15.

if you want me to make one it could be out my beginning next week.

Thanks for the replies guys! I had already ordered the display from VR. It came yesterday and is already in the car. I just got the whole setup so I'm going to drive around with it for a little bit before deciding if colors are the way to go.

REBInc - do you modify people's displays if they ship them to you?

Thanks for answering my questions though!

Yeah, if you already have one you can just ship me yours if you would like it modified.

VRV1, I did that and REBinc turned it around quite fast; did a nice job I might add.
