The reason I was asking is that much of my car's windshield has built-in metalic tint. There is only one small area above the dashboard where V1 can be placed so it can look through the windshield.

I am running the cord along the bottom of the windshield, then along where the A-pillar and the dashboard meet, then down to the fuse box in the glove compartment. The regular cord runs fine everywhere except where the dashboard meets the A-pillar, I couldn't push the cord down enough to hide it because there are metal hooks that lock the dashboard to the A-pillar, they are in the way. So right now the the cord is sort of exposed in that section and it also creats a small gap between the dashboard and the A-pillar. A thin cord will defininately help but if it doesn't work with the V1 I will need to figure out something else.

BTW, does it matter if the cord has two wires or four? the cord (reggular size) I am using now has two wires and the V1 is powered.

Doesn't matter, you only need 2 wires for power, 1 12 volt positive one 12 volt ground. In reality you could get away with just one wire, a 12 volt positive, but then you would need to still ground somewhere close to the detector.

In further reality grounding directly to the vehicle chassis as close to the device as possible is even better than running a ground wire somewhere else in the vehicle to just do the same thing.

If you can get away with just running that single 12VDC + wire around the inside of your car, then find an area of metal thats actually ground on the chassis you could just run a single wire around your problem area, even less occupied space doing that than the thin wire your asking about. Plus you'd be able to run that one wire of ample gauge and not have to risk running too thin of a gauge wire, which in doing so could easily short out and catch your car on fire.

If I'm not coming across as clear on what I just said ask me and I'll try to help you understand what I'm attempting to explain to you with that, hopefully I'm clear though and you'll just say hell yes, that works.

I just spoke with the tech support at VR. He said if I only operate the V1 without other accessories (like the consealed displayed), a two wire cord is good enough. He also said that he had seen people using the thin cords, as long as they can handle 12 volts and 0.5 am it should be ok.

Hey, give it a shot then. At least now if it fries it you can call and say, "Hey, the tech guy TOLD me it would be O.K. I want a new V1 or his head on a spike!"

OK, I just went out to get a thin phone cord,it has four wires. I plugged it in the V1, all it did was making buzzing sound, so the thin cord is out.

    Thanks guys.

Jesus...That's not good. What is the cord rated at? I hope the V1 is O.K...

There is no rating for the thin cord. It just says it's ideal for phone, fax modem and some stuff.

I plugged the regular cord back and the V1 was fine.

it was making the buzzing sound because the wires are not inverted polarity wires for the V1.

    Now I'm confused?

I thought this was how the V1's just operated normally? Beeping and buzzing all the time.

    No,

    Just Kidding,

    That is,

    just kidding about being confused.

Well, see what you get for trusting what the V1 tech support guy told you over what I told you. That'll learn ya.

Now go back and read what I told you about just using a single, as in 1, uno, wire to power your V1. You should have no problem getting a single, of ample gauge (as I also told you), wire to route where ever you need to.

Just because the thing seems to be working for you right now you had best proceed with some caution for the next two weeks. When you damage electronics like that it doesn't always mean you just instantly see the smoke and it stops working. Sometimes the immediate damage is not so obvious. Hate for you to have to find out the hard way with a speeding ticket that something got burnt inside there and is on the edge of failure, but seemingly working for a short time.

Take the time now to carefully re-read what I explained to you about wire gauge, and how you can do this with only running 1, not even 2, wire.

That's pathetic tech support, he should have never even suggested you try that without knowing what gauge wire that was. If that wire would have instead just melted down from being too thin and caught your car on fire he would have been liable for telling you that, you would have been screwed for doing it because he'd never admit to telling you something so dumb like that.
