Question V1 owner told me his laser detection sucks!

I was on the phone the other day w/ a V1 owner and too my surprise, he told me he thinks his V1 sucks on laser detection. I was totally shocked. I told him I have picked up laser in a semi truck using a V1. He said he had sent it in to VR for repair recently in which I informed him his parabolic laser sensing diode inside his V1 may have a smudge/fingerprint on it and it needs to be cleaned w/ some rubbing alcohol/cotton balls. I still find it odd that a V1 user hates the laser detection of his unit. The car he was running his V1 in was a Vette. Personally, I like the laser detection of the V1 and if I meet up w/ this guy, I told him I will clean his parabolic sensor/lens for him to see if it works better. The guy was surprised that their could even be a fingerprint inside the lens. I told him I have seen this before. Thank god for torx bit sets to check out your units.

Well I also dislike my V1's laser detection... because all the false alerts I get, but with that said, it just shows how good the V1 is on laser.

Maybe he thinks a detector is enough for laser protection. Did you tell him that the V1 is the best laser detector (for an RD) that there is?

I've definitely had at least a couple of saves from picking up laser scatter.

I have had quite a few saves of picking up laser scatter ove the years...

i have not had any other detector that gave me warnings like the V1........and i have had many.
I find now tho..my sti is not that bad with scatters also.

Yes Air, I did inform him what you said. When I meet up w/ this guy, I will use my torx bit set to take off the torx screws, and use some rubbing alcohol to clean his parabolic laser sensor and also clean his front and rear lenses to see if it works better at that time. I will update you once this guy's V1 gets cleaned.

I must say that ive had very few false alerts. I would rather have a few falses in a year than it not going off when i need it.

Laser detection works great as far as I'm concearned. I think I even had a laser save about 3 weeks ago from the car bieng gunned in front of me.

I am a huge Bel/Escort fan, yet I agree that the V1 is king of the hill amongst all dash mounted radar detectors with regards to detecting laser. Yet I do recall a picture which I saw on an overseas web site which shows the V1 parabolic reflector attached to its IR receiver:

As you can see, it appears that the injection molded parabolic condenser and IR receiver assembly plugs into a six pin header. I would suggest trying to use a jewelers screwdriver to slightly jiggle this assembly so that its connections break through any built up oxidation on the ends of the six header pins coming off of the LO board within the antenna. This could explain your buddy's poor laser detection problem.

Isopropyl alcohol should be completely safe for cleaning off the front of the parabolic condenser. I want to let everyone know that they SHOULD NOT USE DENATURED ALCOHOL since this type of alcohol is very "hot" and will create a non-removable haze on the condenser lens.
