I wonder what would happen if you replaced it with a clear lens. (shield, whatever)

Technically radar should pass through clear or fogged plastic almost exactly the same, and the plastic lens shouldn’t realy hamper the radar from getting to the RD's antenna ether. So your results are interesting.

Hopefully Jim will add his knowledge to this but any changes should be minimal if at all. However, if it works it works.

UAE, go right ahead and remove the cover. It is intended as a dust cover. The color is not actually black. Hold a light up to it, it's dark red or something. That is the part that filters visible light. If you shut off the laser, you won't need the filter. It's not the "black" that may be reducing your radar range, it's the plastic. If you have experienced less range with a cover, the color is not the issue. It's the cover. Placing another cover there with a different color won't matter. It's still a cover. Personally, (like the rest of the forum) don't believe the extra range is a result of removing a thin piece of plastic. However, if you think that's the case then good for you. Without a cover though, you will acquire dust and debris which will ultimately hurt the detector.

No, but you may cut down some of your laser detection though.

Cut it down from zero to what? Minus zero?

You cannot detect that which does not exist. Basic law of physics.
