My V1 has never fell out of tune as I have never needed to tune it up just let it cool off for a bit and the performance is back to normal

V1's before the 3.85x versions without digital temperature thingy(not sure what its correctly called) are hurt by the heat

My V1 performs much better when it is cooler
So your V1 got hotter than 158°F? How did that happen?

I remove mine when not in use or at work put it in the floorboard with the sun shade over the windshield.
In the Texas heat the V1 performs flawlessly.

The thing is, you'll never know if you don't pay attention. I have post a thread 2-3 years ago about it. LEO was just across the street at point blank range and my V1 did not alert but my X50 was going crazy. If I did not have another RD at the same time, you'll never know it had a problem.

I know the Bel STi can have the same problem since the casing is magnesium. They do get hot when used for a good amount of time. HEAT is the number one problem for any electronics.

Hmmm, my bass guitar amp having tubes would beg to differ about heat and electronics as it disembowels the first ten rows and sterilizes the balcony, once it warms up to a toasty temperature that is, LOL! I think your spot on with heat and the remainder of the electronics out there though.

Even though my V1 rides high on the windshield I always taker ‘er down for security and to keep things cool just in case.

How do the newer V1s with temp comp (3.85?-up) actually handle this? Do they actually perform better when hot, or do they give an over-temp warning rather than just sitting there looking fat, dumb and happy?

    o2,

I don't really know how temperature affects the mechanics of the RD, but...

The temperature compensation utilizes the only error code the V1 can give, an 'E', which was also added with the temperature sensor/compensation software. V1's with the temperature compensation show a capital 'E' in the bogey counter when the internal software cannot correctly calibrate the hardware for the current temperature. Letting it cool down, and re-powering, should, in effect, give the software a temperature at which it can calibrate to.

A trip back to the homeland for a V1 showing an 'E' is overkill. The 'E' is similar to a pop-up, just telling the end-user it didn't complete its POST . If it happens repeated, then there may be a hardware problem not allowing it to calibrate.

Realize that an 'E' is not reflexive or a 1-to-1 function at all. Any error the V1 encounters will throw an 'E'. Seeing an 'E' doesn't mean it is too hot, but only that an error occurred. (Maybe they should output a 'C' for a general calibration error and a 'P' (or the 'E') for specifically a temperature issue. Like error codes...)

    Good info! Thanks

Check the details. I was able to do some troubleshooting most poeople never have a chance to do.
