It depends on your vehicle's radar signature and how far away the LEO clocks you with instant on. If he waits until you are very close before he clocks you, the greater the likelihood you will see them first. That's why you have to pay attention!

From the way I understand it, a 3-5 second tracking history is necessary for a solid speed conviction.

On my Stalker, there's a fastest and strongest signal... As I understand it, a LEO can't lock you in until you're the strongest signal. Can anyone confirm that? There's a great example of an 18 wheeler returning the strongest signal in the manual being passed by a "sports car" going 72. Until the car is the strongest return, they can't lock if I read this right.

All alone, it won't make a difference.

Not really. The way I understand it, the dual-display of the stalker works AGAINST the speeder in that scenario:

If a cop sees a sports car passing an 18-wheeler and flips the switch, he'll see something like FASTEST: 80mph, STRONGEST: 65mph

With a bit of common sense, he can deduce that you are going 80, the truck is going 65. Now he's got two speeds unambiguously.

Most departments, particularly the NJSP cannot lock the fastest target, until it is the strongest target, whether it be common sense or not. Do most officers do that? Of course not. But that's one of the guidelines of operation of the stalkers, and if it was somehow proven that the speed was obtained solely through fastest target, the conviction would be thrown out.

A friend and I had a long-standing debate about this. His position that IO was instant. My position was that in my experience, I have 1 second from the instant anything is detected to the time the LEO has a speed.

The debate standed until one day we were driving together on a trip watching for IO. The car I was driving was capable of a 15mph reduction in one second. We were triggered at 80mph. I drive two-footed, so I nailed the brakes. The LEO flashed his lights, pointed at us, but did not pursue. This has always been my experience, but it was the first time my friend was with me. This settled our debate.

A few years later, I had quite a few LEO friends and asked one of them. He confirmed that I have about a second.

My rule on speed is to only go as fast as I can scrub off in a second if I don't have a rabbit. But I usually won't even do this anymore. It's just not worth the risk running solo. There's rabbits everywhere.

I dont have a V1 but my X50 alerted me to an X band while on I-5 and just as fast as it alerted me, it went away. Then about 5 sec later, it did the same thing, so I slowed down thinking this was an I/O probably within a mile ahead of me....

As I drove the normal speedlimit, I could not spot any LEO's on the road.... can someone explain what my X50 was picking up?

I have never seen instant on radar using the x band for the most part where I drive X band is obsolete. Even though I still haven't programmed my V1 to ignore it just because I rather be safe than sorry.

My conspiracy theory on this I/O experience is that he didn't have a solid read on me to get my speed. Reason I believe this is because in the area that I was driving in the LEO's are known for being stickler and a-holes. Second of all, it was 4:00A.M. and he was sitting there trying to catch a speeder and he catches me doing a good bit over (60/45). I believe he pulled me over because he seen my car dip because as soon as I came up on the hill and my V1 triggered I slammed the breaks pretty hard. I really can't see a LEO from the area I was driving in just let someone go with a warning. From this argument, it seems to me like with I/O they get an instant reading but maybe they need a few more readings to make sure it wasn't an error. Maybe this is a possibility??

Also, I was really surprised at 4:00A.M. on the empty roads that he would be using I/O, I would imagine him wanting to be lazy and not having to keep hitting the switch. I also didn't believe that there are that many RD users in the area I was traveling in that he would choose to use I/O? (which is the reason i was speeing without a rabbit) Majority of the city cops in that area are using C/O that late at night 90% of the time.

In Ohio they use moving and stationary IO X-band to deadly effectiveness. Brushing X-band off might be your worst mistake driving through X territory -- On one trip through the state I had at least 5 IO blasts for which the V1 provided no advance warning.
