    Default Older V1 as backup....

    Long winded post warning.....

***Skip to ***s to cut to the chase

Was driving the GFs car this morning and nearly bought myself a speeding tax not having my usual warning in her countermeasure-less car. She's of the mindset if it beeps she'll check her speed and slow as needed, and is perfectly ok with the V1s level of chattyness, I'm basically a certified zombie. My V1 is also 2 years old (3.681 or .861) and is due for a tune up and some ghosting, Ka Falsing, real LEO J-out, and Xband alerts with X band off issues, but the thought of a week or more driving "naked" is well too scary to send my V1 in just yet. So I'm starting to look for a second/backup RD, that would spend much of it's life in the GFs car. But as it's a backup RD I'm looking to save a little $$ and try and find an older version V1 for cheap and skip the need for update, at least until I make the GF a zombie too

    ***the question is...

Which older version #s should I look for as decent/worthwhile preformers and which versions should I avoid?

I've had v1s as old as the older style "bigger box" that was 1.7 or 1.6. I've found all v1s work pretty well for finding LEOs as long as they are working correctly. When looking at a used v1, that's what I'd really be worried about.

If anything, I'd save up enough to buy a fresh new v1, and then send in your old one for refreshing. It's a lot of money, but you'd always have a v1 this way.

Yeah I looked at that, I also considered giving the lower cost Whistlers a try or thought about looking for a used X50; but if it's a backup only I'd like to keep it at or under the 200 range, as there is chance of it basically collecting dust aside from 2-3 weeks a year, unless the GF gets totally sold on it (at which point we'd be getting her setup with a new one).

But I know that I've read some versions ghosting heavy, some having crazy POP falses, and worry about which ones may be more prone to having fallen out of tune.

There's a thread on here about the various version numbers. I was curious to see what the differences were between my two.

If you like the newer versions, I'd just save up for a new one, and then have VR upgrade your older one to whatever firmware you want.

I couldn't use my brother's old Bel as a backup, even though it is sitting right here. I just can't use a box with blinky lights on it anymore.

I just picked up a 1.8, 3.818 for 200 dollars in mint condition with original box, cords etc. I will be doing some testing in the next few days to see how its up to par with my 3.864 and most likely send it in to get tuned.

If you get a splitter, you can run them both side by side. I've tried it with my two.
