    Default Disabling Bands & POP

I know, I know, I'm the one saying if it's not broken, why fix it? But lately I was thinking about it. I was reading about how by disabling POP and a few bands, would increase reaction time for the V1. For all you who don't know, I live in South Florida and own a V1. I know that X band is supposedly only used in New Jersey but I keep hearing that python is still churning out X band radar units. AND, I know that POP can't legally be used in writing a citation. So here's my questions -

    1) 1st off, by disabling X band OR POP, will I get a quicker response (larger radar detection range)?

    2) Is there any chance, and I really mean ANY chance that any of the state troopers, sheriffs deputies, etc. will be equipped with an X and radar unit?

    3) Would it be wise to disable POP? As I said above, I know POP can't legally be used for a citation, but would leaving it enabled give me an edge if a LEO was actually running a gun in POP mode?

    4) How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I know number four is sightly off topic, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

    Thanks & Drive Safe

No, it does not increase reaction time. And reaction time on the V1 isn't a concern to begin with, so it's a moot point.

All disabling bands will get you is less signals, false and real. Disabling POP will reduce J-outs, but you'd have to be getting over a dozen J-outs a day to make that worth even considering, because POP and X-band are both confirmed in use in Floridia.

Can you link please? I think I missed that if it was discussed.

I've mentioned it many times, but can't recall the threads. We saw X-band at a CFL last year.

    What's a CFL?

I've read in many threads that X band isn't even legal to use for speed enforcement in Florida.

And the odds of encountering POP is pretty slim even if they have POP capable guns.

But is it slim enough to turn off POP alerts, when there is no benefit to doing so?

I have read that X band cannot be used to issue a ticket also. I read the law and it just says what can be used to write a radar ticket and there are no X band guns.

Also, the benefit of turning POP off is to reduce J outs but there was a thread one time where someone did tests which included turning POP on/off X band on/off and recorded the results and found that turning POP off and X off (I think) increased the range of the detection for him.

I read that also but that can't be assumed for my unit because of possible hardware/software revision differences.

I remember those early reports of disabling POP increasing sensitivity to some measure. We often referred to those observations for awhile, but then conflicting reports started to come in. And, of course, Mike V himself is known to say that it would not improve performance.

I agree that there may be major differences in the effects of such band-muting between different V1 versions. This seems most probable, so I don't think any broad generalisations can be made.

I remember reading a post that having pop enabled on the V1 helped increase K band sensitivity a little bit.
