    Update: Build= ver 3.872 - Late July 2009

I just got my upgraded V1 sent back to me a couple days ago, so I hope it has all of the newest hardware and software, I sure paid enough for it. I take it the reason some drivers turn off their POP mode is to reduce false alarms. So this got me to wondering how bad my new upgraded V1 picks up on all of the stuff being transmitted in my nearest city.

I spent a couple hours driving all over the place. I just got a brand new car that gets great gas mileage, so I'm still in the "fun to drive" phase anyway. So I drove by what I know is some well known areas to set off false alerts and I was surprised. My V1 was originally ordered in 2003. So I can easily recall how bad that version was for false alerts before they introduced POP mode because I was using such a detector a week ago. Now perhaps when the company first brought out the POP mode it might of been real bad for false alarms, but I find I don't have any problem with the few false alerts I'm getting on this new upgrade. My 2003 model would false about as bad, the only difference I could notice on my test run tonight was that the new upgrade did pick up the false alerts further away- however I noticed no increase in false alarms as compared to the 2003 design I had been using until this week. What I did make note of was the fact I'm now picking up the same false alarms further away.

On the highway I have yet to get a false alarm on this new upgrade. I'm not saying it wont, I guess I have to drive into a bigger city for it to happen. Either way I must say that my trial run on the highway was very smooth tonight with no false alarms for the short 20 mile run I made.

I guess it might depend on where one lives and drives. Where I drive, I don't have much of a worry of false alarms. But if I was driving in New York City I might be forced to turn POP off. Also I think a lot might depend on what a driver wants. I personally much rather have a signal reported to me and have the chance to decide for myself if it's true radar or not than to have a computer choose for me. I love computers, but sometimes I want more control.

POP on won't increase false alerts from door openers (X and K) and stuff like that...

But it will increase false alerts from el-crappo RDs in other cars, on Ka band. You'll see it "J" out more alerts with POP on.

But of course it's up to you. Leave POP on if it gives you extra peace of mind, but if you find it falsing on Ka a lot, try turning POP off to see if it helps.

I have POP off because MPH guns aren't used in this area, and it cuts down on Ka falses from el-crappos.

Although not officially called POP, there are videos here such as the 9500ci missing a quick trigger pull. If those units you wanted to see in you tube will miss a quick trigger pull, it will most likely miss a POP burst. The POP burst that is hard to detect is the 16ms POP burst. The V1 even with POP on will still miss the alert even at 7 ft. in front of the V1 how much more at a distance. Although I haven't tried the 872 version and hopefully will soon, I am suspecting it to be the same with other POP units. Visit GOL's web site for some POP test. jimbonzzz and his crew did some testing and I'm not sure if you already checked their web site. The 16ms POP guns are the Z25 and Z35 handheld radar units. The V1 can handle the Ka and K band 67ms POP burst but not the 16ms POP burst.

I just call it POP because that seems to be what MPH Industries calls it. I have been most curious about the 16ms guns too, I really have yet to read much about any tests done with guns like the Z-35.

Quick trigger pull does not equal POP.

POP is a burst of radar that's 67ms (or 16ms for Z-series guns).

Quick trigger is simply instant-on where the trigger is pulled, or the radar is taken off hold for a very brief period of time, less than a second. Sort of a "manual POP". Depending on the response time of the radar gun and the dexterity of the LEO operating it, a quick trigger burst could be 1/2-1 second in length.

Some detectors, even with POP ON, may miss a quick trigger due to filtering. They may be programmed to alert to a 67ms POP burst but filter out anything between 100-1000ms because most signals at those rates are falses. By simply changing the filter window to something shorter (say, 100-300ms) the RD has a better chance of alerting to quick triggers.

What you see in GOL's test is pretty much what you get. Here's a short review of what I did and some links to jimbonzzz demo.

    Smile Re: POP question

It's my understanding the term POP belongs to MPH Industries and refers to their extremely fast radar guns that read traffic speed so fast most detectors wont respond. I have been used to instant on for decades, but it seems it has got a lot faster recently (but that's not to confuse it with POP). There are some videos on you tube of tests of a Stalker gun using instant on with some older and new V1s. A simple search for a V1 should bring these videos up on You Tube search. There are also some videos showing the V1 and a Escort being zapped with POP from a MHP gun, a Bee III I think it was... I can't post links until I have 15 posts.

UPDATE: I posted the wrong dates for the V1 patent expiration, it is neither 2017 nor 2018, it's 2013, based on this: I found a date for the V1 arrow radar direction finder technology, it's a good patent that expires on July 20, 2013 unless they have found a way to extend the patent. Here is one source showing this information: http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5300932/claims.html
