Newbie question

OK here goes a dumb question but what the heck. When I see a LEO shooting hand held guns at approaching traffic I have yet to hear any type of an alert. I have all bands on and am running in little l mode. I understand that this type of gun only hits the car it is aimed at shouldn't I get a warning? I do not have any information on the type of gun but I have seen these units on many occasions and never heard a peep. Can someone enlighten me on the specifics of this? I'm sure you guys have a logical explanation.

It is a Laser Gun and your V1 cannot protect you against it the beam is very small and might not even set off your detector 90% of the time. You need a laser jammer to protect yourself against it

Since most RADAR units are vehicle mounted and not HAND-HELD these days, it is safe to assume that any officer with a HAND-HELD unit is shooting LASER. Laser is just like in the movies. It is a very small beam, usually <1" when it departs the gun. Due to minor refraction the laser beam's diameter DOES increase with distance but still only reaches a diameter of about 3' at a distance of 1000'. For this reason it is very unlikely that you will receive an alert if the officer is shooting vehicles around you and it is even PROBABLE that you will not receive and alert if he is shooting you and your V1 is mounted high on a large vehicle.

Please keep in mind that the alert that you're worried you're not receiving is worthless anyway. The gun the officer is using will most likely lock your speed in under 1 second unless you have a Laser Jammer, leaving no time to slow down. For this reason most on this forum agree that mounting your RD high, for better reception of radar, is more beneficial to you.

if the officer has the handheld unit next to his eye then hes shooting laser if he doesnt then hes shooting radar. Just like previous said they beam width for the laser will be so small that it might never warn drivers behind.......only protection is a laser jammer......in this case 90% of the time rabbits would not help......

As for the V1 mount it high on the left or the right side of the rear view and make sure you hardwire the detector so its not completly noticable from the outside......and when on the freeway always drive in the A mode, Never in the logic modes......

Thanks for all the information. I thought that if it was laser that I would at least get a quick laser alert but I guess if the beam is that small and is focused on one car, that is a lot to ask of a radar detector. I do have my V1 located at top center. I understand the importance of the A mode but wouldn't I get an alert if I was being targeted? By the way what is a ballpark figure for a decent laser jammer?
