Default Ka range seems a little....weak?

I've had my V1 since last Thursday. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. My only grips are that at night, being a fresh new owner, I can't distinguish if K or Ka is lite up! I suppose with time I'll just recognize the tones and won't depend on the lights.

Now, K range has been excellent to me. I pick up the two speed board signs well in advance when approaching the sun pass. My Ka range has been anything but impressive since my first lock on one. I've had about 5 or so. Only 2 of them being a threat to me though.

I have my radar mounted high, to the left of my rearview mirror. I can post a video later of me passing a state trooper running C/O Ka. I passed the cop initially with him on my side of the road. Range was weak, glad I was doing just 4 over. I got off the highway then got back on heading the oppote direction, took out my iPhone to record and I was still amazed by thr short response. It was a clear day and it was a straight view between me and the cop and the radar alerts moments after I've already spotted him again.

Is this normal? I've watched countless videos of V1s in use and range was MUCH better on Ka. My unit is brand new and of course 3.872 with settings at default besides X band off and was in advanced L at the time.

sounds like he had the range of the unit on low witch would be less then 1/4 mill,a stalker dsr or golden eagle 35.5 have that option on them units,i personally have one myself witch can increase range and lower range on my unit. he could also be Q/T cars as they go by and the v1 only beep couple of times.

These range settings do not decrease the output power of the radar antenna, but rather only decrease the range at which the reflected radar is acknowledged.

I figured they must have a strength adjustment on their guns. I live in Tampa FL if that helps narrow down which guns they might use.

I believe it was C/O. It alerted for a good 25 seconds I'd say from the time I was approaching until I passed and got off the highway. The range still seemed very weak though. I don't think it went full blast either as I passed and I was in the fast lane and he was on the shoulder next to the slow lane. Making one lane that seperated us.

I think I am going to mess with some settings again to get better range. If I had really been speeding, it would have done me no good. I still hVe Ka guard on and I read disabling POP may increase range and yield less Ka falsing.

Also, I read that Ku is not used in the US, but may be coming to thr US and iceread that it will never be used in the US. Should I leave it off or turn it on just for piece of mind?

It would help if you would post the video. He may have just been running radar out of one end of his car. For example, targeting from the rear of his car but not the front. I sometimes see the cruiser before hearing the alert if they are shooting in this manner and shooting away from you.

Here is a rough, rough sketch

    <<<<<< Your direction of travel

    ------------------------------------ Median
    <<<<<<<<<<< COP

Whereas the "C" in the word "COP" is the rear of the cop car and the radar shooting out the back, but not front.

And you are traveling toward the cop, who is shooting radar away from you, and not clocking your speed (though he could easily flip on the front and get you)

Edit: also, with Kaguard off you will be getting LOTS of false Ka alerts, every cheapo detector you pass, and will not be able to use the V1 reliably.

When my v1 alerts Ka, I know it's time to slam on the brakes

I will post the video when I get home later today. I did think of that. He was on my side of the median initially facing the same direction as me. I assume he was using his rear radar to catch targets as they rounded the curve.

Maybe a modified display or concealed display would help. You can specify the colors for each band. If you are handy with electronics you can DIY, otherwise you can cantact languy99
