It's simply the ability of the RD to pick up radar at different angles in relationship to your car (not all radar will be directly in front of you). Some RD have a narrow focus (viewing angle) while others have a wider focus. Generally it is easier to get more distance from a narrow focused antenna. If the antenna was too wide you would get alot more false alerts but if the antenna is too focused you will miss the LEO that is around the next curve in the road. if it helps make your decision, I have a V1 from around 2001 that I am just now thinking about sending in for a tuneup. 10 years later, it still works like a charm
