Buying a returned V1, you get all the benifits as being brand new, able to upgrade as well in the future.

Do any of yall know why they are returned? Is it possible that they were returned cause it did not work, then v1 refurbished the unit? Or are they returned cause the 30days trial has expired? Im about to purchase a returned unit this week and I just want to make sure it will be in brandnew condition.

Im sure 99% of the returns are the ones before their 30 days are up! Just people trying them out and decided they didnt want it.

Also the units that are returned are put back on the bench for a 100% ops check to make sure its perfect.

Long ago - 1992 or 1993 - I was earning $8 an hour and after reading the Car and Driver test of the first V1, I wanted one. At the time it cost me more than I cleared in a week. I ordered one and had to wait my turn because there was a huge backlog of orders after the C&D test, I believe they said 3 to 6 months. I asked 'are you going to ramp up the production?' and I was told 'no more than we can, and still make them right.' After several months I started to reconsider spending that much money on a radar detector even as good as V1 was supposed to be, and decided that when I got home from work that day I would call and cancel. Guess what was waiting when I got home; my V1.

Knowing I could return it anyhow I decided to try it out. The arrows and bogey counter alone were such an eye-opener for me I decided there was no way I was going to send it back. I've been a V1 owner ever since.

BTW I read a site which in fact does re-sell the V1 (new) for a higher price though I don't recall why they do so. They also sell other brands. Their listing says 'Valentine is the only brand we carry where we have never gotten one returned to us as defective.' From reading the forums here it looks like the V1 is significantly more reliable than any of the others I've read about, including those which are touted as 'better'.

One last thing - that first unit got an upgrade a couple years later (which brought a full as-new warranty too), and finally at the age of about 13 years the mode-select button stopped working. V1 offered to go through the whole unit and get it up to original specs for $40 - or they would allow me $125 on it towards a brand new one. I decided to get the newest one. How many 'detectors' could be fixed to original specs after 13 years for $40 including shipping? How many at that age would be worth $125 even non-working on a trade-in? Only V1. Those who think the V1 is 'expensive' have not spend enough time buying and discarding 'less expensive' units. But in time, we all learn.

You could have made a fortune having them redo the old v1.7 and selling it on ebay.... well over that $125 they gave you!

Hmm. Not a bad idea. For a $40 investment I could have probably gotten an easy couple hundred for it on Ebay (and I do sell stuff on Ebay) but this was quick and easy and still not a bad deal at all.
