Default drove 500 miles across ohio and WV today...lots of radar...heres what I noticed

    This is on a v3.873.

Started off the day with an amazing Ka detection of around-a-curve instant-on being ran by a mobile norton PD (akron, ohio) area on i-76/224.

I got one Ka blip (just one dot) and then noted that I traveled .4 miles before passing him. This was with a curve in between mind you. So, if he was traveling the same speed, then he would have been .8 to .9 miles away when I detected him.

Next had an ohio state patrol trooper running constant on x-band in the median of i71 in the delaware, ohio area. He was stationary. He was shooting away from me (at oncoming traffic - no threat to me), but nonetheless, I started detecting him 1.2 miles away from his position. This was a dead-straight stretch.

Next detected a couple i/o k-blips on rt.33 around groveport ohio. I didnt measure the distance, but sure enough an OSP sport utility vehicle passed by me soon thereafter.

In a rural Meigs county area of rt.33, I detected a couple I/O x-band blips as I crested a bridge over a road. I had to turn onto that road and went around the curly Q exit. Sure enough coming down that road (he was perpendicular to me and .5 miles away when I got the alert) was an OSP unit running occasional I/O x-band.

Entered West Virginia. Ok. thngs were tougher here.

I got .1 miles of warning against a WV state trooper that appeared to be running (but not sure) continous Ka on a curvy portion of i-77. He was rounding curves - in the oncoming highway lanes when I first got the alert. Not a lot of time to react, but enough.

    Ok. back in ohio.

SE ohio, on I-77. Started getting blips of i/o k-band and hit the trip ODO button. .4 miles elapsed until I passed him (so he was .8 miles from me when I first detected him). There was a slight bend too between me and him when I got the first alert.

    New philadelphia area.

OSP in median shooting laser. I made visual contact and slowed before I got an alarm.

A lot of excitement for a V1 user...

    There's a 50/50 chance it was either 33.8 or 35.5.

They have I/O K and a bit of X on I77. South east ohio is K band central though it appears.

    bigal,

Yeah this was on i-77 north of charleston, many, many curves. Im 100% sure it was the state police.

I had another situation like this (deja vu) on that same stretch about a month ago. Once again, I had about .1 to maybe .2 miles warning with the curves in between us. This is time from first alert until I passed the unit. So double the distance traveled (assumes he was traveling the same speed as me) and thats how far away we were from each other when I first detected him.

The scary thing is it may be totally possible they were running constant on Ka, because the signal didnt abruptly drop when I passed them. Though it did ramp down pretty quick.

Theres a couple stationary Ka speed signs in the construction zones and I was measuing first alert distance (Ka guard ON the whole trip). I was detecting these anywhere from .5 to .6 miles away. So not a lot of distance on those either.

Those (and sometimes the k-band speed signs) tend to be weak.

BTW also saw 2 unmarked dodge charges sitting in the median, but I didnt get any alert. I assumed they were undercovers because they had the spotlights near the mirrors. Thats one thing we dont have to worry about in ohio because there is a marked-car law for any kind of traffic offense.

Is there any special low-powered Ka unit the WV state police use in their cruisers?

no, i was only doing maybe 5 to 10 over most of the time. Had I been going faster, I wouldnt have gotten a ticket with the stellar performance of V1 3.873.

BTW, there was an aircraft speed enforcement trap I ran into on I-270 in the 'hilliard' area west of columbus. I found this unusual because its not a holiday weekend / weekend / or anything special for that matter.

VASCAR trap in ohio, now that is rare, even more rare on a non holiday.

No, but I think the reason for a lot of the short alerts is because there is so much dense foliage lining the highways that it absorbs the radar a lot.
