Default How did this cop get me?

OK Here's the story. Last Sat I'm driving to a friends home in Olean (Upstate NY) from Rochester, NY. I'm on Rt86 driving my Mercedes GL350. I have 1-2 bars on my V1 KA band. I kind of instinctly hit my brakes but then nothing I assume its noise from one of the streets off the highway.

Then about a Mile later I get full blast KA band and I'm like **** - I slow down and pull over to the slow lane. I see a trooper about 1/2 mile back coming full speed and matchs my speed which is by now 65. He then pulls up behind me a light on.

So I pull over and you guys know what he says. Says he got me going 85. Glad he didn't get me when I was at 100. Anyway, he says he doesn't ticket Physicians and lets me off. Also asks me if I have a Radar as everytime he hit me I hit the brakes.

I guess I had false sense of security with Quad LI and V1 setup. What went wrong here? Did he have Instant KA or was he using a regular KA gun but turning on and off? Also did he have a speed on my car with the 1-2 bar KA hit?

What did I do wrong? Besides speeding DUH!

The Stalker Dual used by the NYSP has moving / same lane capability just as do most all Ka radars today. He was obviously hitting you with instant on shots. The first couple blips could have been a very brief shot, but it could aslo have been that he was not aligned with you and did not get a reading. In either case I doubt he actually got a reading if your V1 did not give a strong alert......either his shot was too short (it takes longer in moving same lane for the radar to read you) or you were outside the main cone of the radar and he did not get a good return.

The full blast alert was another IO shot where he certainly had you in the cross hairs and got a strong enough return to read your speed. Within 1/2 mile with good alignment you are well within range of his radar.

Lessen learned..........if you get a brief weak alert on the rear horn (arrow) keep an eye on the rear view for a LEO coming up on your six.

For sure Lesson Learned. Was thinking I needed updating.

    Here's what it says:

Upgrade Recommendation: You already have our best performer, enhanced by crystal-controlled frequency tuning. More recent V1s, however, have two additional features. Traffic Monitor Filter eliminates the K-band false alarms caused by a traffic flow-measuring system being installed along some U. S. highways. SpeedInfo sends frequent K-band radar bursts into the traffic stream (S P E E D I N F O :: delivering data that knows your flow to learn more). If you drive in an area with one of these systems, this upgrade will pay off immediately. Extended Serial Protocol (ESP) enhances two-way communication with SAVVY and future peripheral devices.

Is ESP and TRAFFIC MONITORING worth the upgrade?

I updated my post with information a little more specific to your initial post.

No......the upgrade (ESP / TMF) apply mainly to filtering options to reduce annoyance alerts on K-Band to Traffic Monitors and screening out alerts under a preset speed. Neither will enhance the detection capabilities of your current V1, and if anything will take the edge off of K-Band performance.

Being 1/2 mile back is pretty far and you really don't get too many oppurtunities if a LEO is moving up on your back shooting same lane IO. And there is no detector that is better than the V1 for sniffing out radar approaching from the rear. So as unfortunate as it is, you had your oppurtunity for a save on the first few braps of the V1........should have slowed and kept it there for a few minutes while seeing what was coming up behind. On the 2nd blast it was too late, he moved into to better position and got the lock on you.

Don't feel bad.........happens to the best of us when we think something off to the side set off our detector, then run face 1st into a trap way down the road or find it was a LEO sneaking up from behind.

I appreciate your explanation it makes complete sense this is what happened. The small blips on KA did get me spooked enough to slow down a bit. Which i suppose helped.

    You didn't get a ticket because you're a physician? I'm confused.

    Doctors, nurses, EMTs........etc.

Professional courtesy. Besides, who do you think is going to work on that LEO if he gets shot, stabbed or brought in from a car accident (God forbid)?

Could be professionnal but surely not ethical ....mister joe pays,
    mister physician passes ....

Not to say I am not happy for Jamminx ---just to underline that
    the system is rotten.

Eh.....I can live with it. If it was a judge or attorney getting cut loose I'd be upset. I'd hate to expire on the table because the cardiologist lost his license and couldn't find a way in to the ER.

So what if your surgeon did all he/she could do, but you needed your priest to give you the last rites?
