    Default First V1 impressions!!! WOW!

The arrows were lieing to me! My college town uses X-band radar for stoplight timers and I usually begin to pick them up at my fraternity house with my BEL where I parked my car last night. So i go to the mail room pick up the V1 walk to pick up my car and just throw the V1 in for a quick ride to the traffic senors and the V1 was going crazy with X-band....I wish I didn't have class this afternoon otherwise I'd be finding some Ka traps with my locals and their talons......Maybe do a comparision of the range of BEL v995 vs V1...

So far since the arrows weren't 100% correct I am not sold but the V1 has the best suction mount of any detector I have used. It is effortless unlike my testy BEL mount which takes for ever to get off!!!!

I am going on a road trip for spring break with my brothers each have cheap detectors....I might let one of them borrow my v995 and see how they like it. but I am going to use the V1 this thing is worth the money alone with the mount!!!!!

Forgot to mention how light weight it is?

I noticed on my friends older V1's (not .826), that the arrows are incorrect sometimes when going through areas of heavy radar population...

As a matter of fact, something that baffled my friend and I, his V1 had both his front and rear arrows blinking showing that the front and rear bogey where essentially 'both' the biggest threat, this was extremely odd, and hasnt happened before/since.

One of my tech friends (a different one then above) said that all the V1 probably does... (cut all the tech mumbo jumbo) is process what antenna is recieving the strongest radar signal.

    Front antenna (front arrow)
    50/50ish (sides)
    Rear antenna (rear arrow)....

And for the biggest threat: It uses band priority, and then also signal strength.

(He said it in much more complicated terms, and said infact it probably has many more 'equations' it processes (algorithms if you will) every second to make the arrows more accurate.)

On a different note: CVR, nice to hear your V1 sticks up in this cold weather, and when I tried the V1 for the first time I couldnt believe the weight either.

rob, make sure the unit is mounted far enough below the rear view mirror so it isn't picking up reflections from the backside of the mirror.

    Good luck with it!

Ahh, I forgot about that. This was a problem that I had in the S70 when I mounted it too high. I think it has to do with the roofline either blocking the rear antenna's view out the back or reflecting signals from the front to the rear antenna. I just dealt with it because the arrows were dead on in 99% of real encounters. It doesn't happen in the Honda because my rear glass is actually higher than top of the windshield. It shouldn't be a problem once you get out and find some real radar.

It would not surprise me, just like a traditional RD picks up bounced reflection of radar, the V1 with both front and rear will be able to pick up alot more (the front gets the normal dose of radar but now you have bounce reflections from behind you and the V1 rear antenna picks that up. Add in the biggest wave length X band and your V1 will be over whelmed with radar from both front and rear even though there is only one bogey.

Yeah I was parked in front of my house and it was saying x-band behind me when i knew they were infront...

I went out searching for Ka and of course you can't find it....no local even left the gun on like they usually do

Just so we are clear I am currently driving a jeep cherokee sport and have the V1 mounted mid-windshield. I will mount high soon

Yeah sometimes the V1 gets confused, no real big deal.

Yeah thats the golden rule when getting an RD, when you wanna find one you cant.

Another thing with traffic light sensors... they're usually mounted quite high, much higher than a normal LEO's radar gun. This leads to the rear antenna picking up more reflections, which throws the arrows off. At one intersection where I live, if I'm at the light, especially with someone behind me, the rear arrow lights even though the transmitter is in front of me. Cars going by will cause the arrows to shift periodically as they reflect the signal as well.

The arrows are a lot more accurate with real radar, than with traffic light sensors.

Yeah, generally with real encounters the arrows will work better, the false locations just seem to confuse them in (rare) cases.

Rob: I say your next thruway trip post up the details, see if the arrows are correct, odds are they will be... also whats up with the Jeep instead of the Volvo? (The Jeep the winter beast)?
