    Default New V1 got it, 8500 didn't - but.....

My new V1 arrived yesterday. on time, as promised, no problems.

Tried it out yesterday - didn't beep all the time like my self-cal'ed 8500 (non X50). It was so quiet I wondered if it was working.

So today I went to find the speed sign that my 8500 didn't pick up last time I went by. Found it, drove past the other way from where it was aimed and NOTHING. Turned around and drove back by and sure enough the V1 picked it up as X band 4-6 leds, at about 25 FEET from the sign (All bogeys, all factory settings). Well, better than the 8500.

Still confuses me though, this sign reports your speed at about 250 ft from the sign - you can read it a long time before the V1 goes off (or forever with the 8500).

    Can anyone explain?

Took it to the local WalFart center and it was crazy - drove me nuts. Definately will have to make some changes to the factory settings.

Is X band off OK in central FL? Pop Off Ok?

Two weak Ka beeps J'ed out on drive home that was silent yesterday.

    Lastly Mike's Report # 3 says:

"How to tell if V1 has been changed from factory settings." : " If the unit has been changed, P will appear briefly in the Bogey Counter soon after V1 is switched on (after the lamps-on test, but before the Mode indicator appears.)

Mine has the P on it every time it starts up. I checked all the settings and they are the default. What gives?

    Thanks,

    GLT

FLorida you can disable X band. POP is your choice, some people disable it, some trade off the extra "falses" for the added peace of mind turning POP on.

My old 8500 picks up k speed signs from other zipcodes

Seriously though. I think speed signs have higher k output than vehicle mounted radar units.

The V1 does not recognize FM-CW modulation as a valid police radar signal and tries to reject it. FM-CW is allowed for license-free "Part 15" devices by the FCC. FM-CW is not allowed for police radar. There are numerous traffic-volume sensors using FM-CW spread all around metropolitan areas these days that detector owners would rather not produce an alert. Otherwise freeway driving (in Cincinnati, at least) would be very annoying. It's a good thing that the V1 rejects FM-CW modulated signals.

    2) The speed sign may have drifted out of the police radar band from aging or temperature. "Part 15" devices are somewhat notorious for this behavior. Automatic door sensors and Doppler security sensors are both "Part 15" devices, too. Few automatic door sensors use FM-CW because of the added expense. The speed sign devices can afford the added cost of including the FM-CW modulating hardware.

    3) The V1 in question may need for our service department to have a look at it to make sure it is operating correctly."

Thanks Jim - I saw that somewhere before but forgot.

Still odd that it would come up as X-Band at very close range, but most likely not a V1 problem since the passport didn't pick it up at all.

If I had my guess, that speed sign would be VERY old.

there is a new speed sign in Athens that the V1 doesn't pick up until you are right on it. I was going to stop the other night and check it out in more detail, but they moved it...
