    Default XTR 325-425-560 questions

I'm considering getting one of these new units and have a few questions.

    1) Is the performance of the units equal? I know they are new and not much testing has been done, but based on other units that have been out a while, would the internals be the same and hence the performance for a series of units that are released at the same time?

    2) If the performance of the units is likely to be the same, then I would either get the 325 or 425, since I wouldn't use the extra features of the 560 and like the black top of the 325 and 425 more than the silver top of the 560 (less reflection in the windshield). Which type of display do people like better, the icon display of the 325 (seems to be the same as some of the older units), or the text display of the 425? I know that someone didn't like how bright the backlit display of the 425/560 is. What do other people think?

    3) With the 325, how do you know which city mode if any the unit is in? I couldn't tell from the online manual how this is indicated.

    Thanks

Without any real testing done on these models it is hard to give a solid answer.
All 3 of these use the same antenna but may use different chips and processors for different results.

As far as displays I think that will be a matter of opinion.
I do not like the backlit display on the XTR 560 I have because it is either to bright at night even on dim and if you turn the display off you can not see anything.
If I were to buy another one I would say I would go with the other type of display based on the results I have seen with my 560

As for City mode the display will show c1 or c2 or H for highway modes

I always say get the top model. Whistler seems to make it better. Get the 560. Seems the 73 and the 56 differ a little on audio loudness. You really get what you paid for and in the case of whistler get the top one. You cant let a few extra features put you between you and a 560. boomerman did the right thing buying getting the top model after I much argue him about the difference. With the 73 and 58. Of course if you get whistler for anything its for the laser for sure. Ka is decent range K is excellent X is great and laser is WoW. Of course whistler aint a V1 one but if theirs one thing whistler has done is get laser right. Lets put it this way everytime I encounter laser with my whistler it always shocks me with the great range and the scatter that it picks up.

How is your Whistler mounted? High, mid, low?

ever so slightly below the rearview mirror. This is the sweet spot on a car. For a truck mount as low as you can.

As far as the car goes mounting ever so slightly below the rear view mirror allows the detector to peak through the other drivers windshields ahead of you and in essence allows you to pick up laser scatter. This allows for the best field of view. Because lets face it a radar detector aint gonna pick up scatter when mounted low and all it can see is a big fat bumper in front of you. Think about it what kind of field of view is that. Also make sure you use a leveler bubble on the underside of the detector to ensure its level. This will make sure that the detector will pick up laser. It might look level to the eye but you will be amazed how far you are off when using the leveler bubble.

I think the bottomline is I have never missed a laser alert with my mounting style and the people who mount low complain about not picking up laser until the last minute. Of course with trucks mount low.
