Hardwiring RD to dome light

I have had some thoughts about hardwiring my XTR-690 to my overhead dome light, so today i just poped off the plastic cover to the light and i just found this:




I'm wondering if i can just splice those wires and find out what is positive and negative.

Also i was wondering if i could cut the cigarette lighter adapter wire that came with it and use that to hardwire my RD.

If you do slice the cig plug, still make sure you keep the fuse in your circuit though, for safety reasons.

Sure, but if you tap into those particular wires then it will only work when the light is turned on. You need to find the source ahead of the switch.

That probably isn't going to work as it will only power the detector when the light is on. The wires most likely are run down somewhere and into a relay which controls the light. You'd have to switch on the dome light all the time.

In other words, if you hardwire it to this, you'll only be able to use the radar detector when your door is open. :wink:

or with your dome light on

if it doesnt power it i will keep the switch on. but the weird thing is i tested it with a volt meter and when the light bulb is in, it will display 0 volts, but with the light bulb out, it will display 12 volts all the time
