All three of their top tier detectors should've come in a box instead of that evil plastic, if for nothing else to differentiate from the rest of the line and mainly from Cobra as stated. Is Whistler indicating the Pro 78 is a higher quality model than the 690SE?

The major retailers determine what the packaging type is to be.
Many large retailers want the clamshell

For over 30 years I have always used a RD when I drive, I feel naked without one (kind of like driving without a seat belt now). I am in and out of my vehicle several times a day and I ALWAYS remove the RD when I get out. The removal issue that I previously mentioned was proving to be a major irritation so I decided to do something about it. About 30 minutes with 120 grit emory cloth removing the paint from the mounting tab took care of the problem. Michael, please take note of this.
Another thing that I really like about the 690SE is the compass. It is a plus that it shows something useful on the display when it is not alerting and may come in handy some day if I ever get stopped (if you know what I mean). Kudos to Whistler for this feature!
BTW, the K band sensitivity is a LOT higher than my old Pro73!

Is your compass actually accurate? I have calibrated it a number of times now and drive with it as Radar only because compared to all my GPS units showing the same information in their compass' the 690SE was always off/wrong.

Even though they were probably trying to cut costs a nice case makes the detector look more attractive to the casual shopper. The bigger the package the more it stands out over the Cobra plastic wrapped models next to it. The case my 9500ix came in was a leather exterior with a velvety meterial in the inside. You can still use it to store the detector. I believe all semi decent detectors should come in cases IMO.

works fine on mine too. for proper calibration u need to drive in a open space in a circle for once or twice to get accurate calib.

It's a compass for goodness sake! E W N S How accurate do you need it to be? Nobody here is lost at sea and trying to use it for navigation or anything! It's a complimentary function and it works fine as such.
