    Default XTR-695 Resets Randomly

Hey guys, I bought my xtr-695 back in Dec. 2008. Every now and then when I turn off my car, it resets back to factory settings and I have to redo all the settings again. It started happening for the longest time and I don't remember when it first started. It does it randomly so maybe for a few weeks it would be fine and then it resets. Sometimes it resets in days. I'm not sure if its the xtr thats defective or is it an issue with my car? I try to keep my xtr out of the sun when I park. I might have left it in the sun a few times...would that mess it up? I tried my other cars but I've never drove them long enough for that issue to happen. Thanks for your help!

or, it only occures in one vehicle

Intermittent problems can be most difficult to diagnose
I would first suspect power issues.

Does your device power-up with your cars' ignition switch ?
It's always best to turn your detector on, manually, after your car has started and the electrical system has stabilized.

Yeah, I'm suspecting power issues too. Yes, it does power on with my ignition switch. So if the electric system is unstable it can cause the unit to reset to factory settings? I guess I'll just keep powering it up after I start my car. Thanks for the tip!

    Just a thought,
could be the car's battery is weak or the battery cables are corroded. When starting an engine with a weak battery and or loose/corroded battery cable clamps, the voltage drop to accessories (during cranking the engine to start) can be appreciable...down to a few volts in a worse case scenario!
If there's only a few volts available during engine cranking and the detector circuitry doesn't have a long enough power on reset or a large enough capacitor with a reversed-biased diode towards the battery or other means to compensate for low cranking voltage, it could be a free for all whats gonna happen when the detector comes out of power on reset with only a few volts at its power connector.

nope, i have gold plated battery connections.

    to the op,
turning off the unit before you turn off the car wont matter, atleast it never did for me. the unit powers up upon recieving the power signal, which is why it has problems reseting.

When you change your settings turn off the unit with the power
button (leave the unit plugged in) and then turn it back on and see
    if that helps
Sorry, but you can hit the power button to exit option mode but did
you actually turn the unit off after completing the changes?

Battery terminal connections are only one possibile cause.
    Others causes to consider:
    1. The RD is just plain bad
    2. The RD power cord has an intermittent open circuit.
    3. The neg. battery cable has a faulty (loose-corroded) connection to the car's chassis.
    4. Corroded fuse, fuse link or circuit breaker connection.
    5. Loose electrical connection at the cigar lighter. Either the RD plug or the lighter's internal wiring or even a flaky fuse. This could be especially true if the lighter is/was actually used to light cigarettes.

If i had this problem, i'd put a voltmeter acrosse the RD's power cord connector teminals (without plugging into the RD) where it plugs into the RD and start the engine. The voltage during cranking should be a little less than 12 Volts if the car's electrical system is healthy. After the engine starts, the voltage should be anywhere between around 13 Volts up to 14.5 Volts (maybe a little higer in cold weather).
If all that appears to be OK, then with the voltmeter still connected to the RD's power cord wiggle, shake, tug the power cord, especially near its connectors and around the cigar lighter area.
If there's no fluctuation in voltage, then its time to call Whistler tech support.

its tapped into the radio power wire, which the radio has never had problems resetting its stations or settings. i cant tap the cigarette lighter power because the power supply is constant at all times.
