laser sensitivity?

Are the whistler's real bad at detecting laser or is it just me? I have one mounted high in the cabin, got hit with a pl3 and got no alert...I was the only car on the freeway.

Well I was running a V940 & a 1763 together and got hit with laser the V940 picked it up 3 sec earlier

How do you know you were actually hit? Did something else in your vehicle alert? Laser can be a challenge for any RD to detect due to the narrow properties of the beam. During short range LIDAR encounters (500 feet or less usually), only my countermeasures alert, at longer ranges, both RD and countermeasure alert.

How far was the LEO when you believe you were hit? Since you have the RD up high, if the LEO was close to you during the initial hit, the infrared beam may have been very narrow and caused insufficient scatter to be picked up by a elevated RD. Mounting a RD low on the window improves laser reception if you are hit, but without a countermeasure, doesn’t do much good anyway, as you already know.

Yeah I mean I felt it was farther but maybe not. I'm installing my lpp soon so that will alert. Anywho I was just wondering. What countermeasures do you have for llaser?

For starters, the 1763 laser is not as sensitive as the 940, for that matter it is also not as sensitive as products we make today.

Mounting high is radars friend, but lasers enemy.

Laser Beam diameter plays a big role in this as distances of under 1000ft is not always enough to be seen at the base of the windshield never mind the top of the windshield.

Greater distance is needed for the beam to become wider and detected by a receiver on the dashboard. Certainly having a more sensitive detector helps, but location is key to increasing your odds of an alert while having a good jammer is the ultamate defense.

I did a recent test with an XTR-690SE and an 8500x50 (S7) using a low power laser jammer tester that fires 100-125-200 PPS. The Whistler gave some impressive results. It had approx twice the detection range vs the 8500x50.

Granted this was an informal test in a parking lot with a low power tester. But I was still impressed with the XTR's range. And I know the 8500x50 is working fine as I recently got it back from Escort after a tuneup in which they repaired the Lidar functionality as part of my service.

Hmm, I feel that it does a decent job, speaking of the 695se, I've picked up scatter several times (through other car windshields) and I've only gotten a legitimate alert a handful of times, but I was not really over the limit.

Laser detection is spotty on any detector, due to the narrow beam. Since it spreads out over distance (think of a cone or pyramid shape, with the pointed end at the gun and it getting wider as you get further away), you actually have a better chance of detecting it at a longer distance than close-up.

If your detector is sensitive enough, it may be able to pick up beam scatter or diffused beam reflected off the cars in front of you, or the fringe edge of the beam if it happens to hit your RD. But even the V1, which is by far the most sensitive laser detector, doesn't detect scatter hits very often. This is why, if laser is a threat in your area, you need jammers. Jammers can always pick up laser hits because the heads are (hopefully) mounted in the center-mass area of the front end of your car/front plate where LEOs typically aim for. A high-mounted RD may not see a direct shot at all at close range.

With the detectors I've had (including S7, M3, and M4 Belscorts, and V1), the S7(X50) and M3(Redline) seem to be about the same, needing a more or less direct hit to alert (not much scatter sensitivity). Fatchick1o9's post indicates that the XTR-690E would come next, better than the S7/M3 Belscorts (I've never had any Whistler to test). My M4 RX65 is quite sensitive to laser scatter, quite a bit more than the S7 and M3 units I've tried. Then at the top is the V1.

It could of been under 1000ft for sure...i did a test with my laser speed finder...and if i hit the windshield it detected everytime but on the grill nothing which isn't unusual...guess i got to get my jammer installed asap!

I got hit with laser in town about 8 months ago. I actually saw the leo in his vehicle and watched him take aim. Shortly after my Whistler XTR695E was screaming laser. It was mounted high over the RVM at the time. It was on a long straight 3 lane street with the leo in a parking lot on the right. PSL was 40 I was doing about 38 at the time (It is a known enforcement area). He actually hit me 3 separate times in about 800 feet. I think he was switching aim between two other vehicles and mine. One was doing well over 40 and he did not stop him.?

I don't encounter laser much but I know it is around. Speeding in my area is not too smart.
