Default Re: Bought Whistler Pro 78SE, should I return for Beltronics Pro 300? Is mine faulty?

The 78 Se put's out very very little stray emissions and I have tested it with about everything I own.

I have a very newer Bell 995 that doesn't mind setting all my other detectors off sadly.

Don't know about this new breed Bell has put out yet.

older cheaper whistlers and older cheapo cobra's emit very badly but not the breed with the new LNA's

I have found detectors with the older gun diode receivers are usually the worst for stray emissions.

    Its called Instant On.
Cops don't have to leave the radar broadcasting all the time but instead emit the signal when a car comes into view.
No radar detector will help you in this situation.

I saw video. look, i dont know about you but off axis is one of the most important feature in my opinion as the majority of speedtraps are around a corner or off to the side somewhat and the whistler doesnt cut it. if your driving highway, you may still run into the off axis traps. here in florida, fhp is always around corners waiting with i/o ka band right when you turn into it and too late unless you have a good unit like bel pro300/escort x50 black, etc.
the video sums it up for me and glad i didnt buy a whistler. ide rather save up for the extra 100 bucks to buy the more reliable pro300. and ive seen new pro300 from amazon and other retail outlets online (for 249.99) although i always buy from dealer(belscort) to get the latest firm, and warranty, etc.
the whistler did better than i thought it would but it did well on straight shots. around a curve and the signals gone and you just gotta ticket.
    nice video. thanx

Hey thanks for doing the test. I noticed in your video that it seemed lik TFSR was on for both units. In the comments section on youtube you state that with TFSR off on the bel your unit started to alert at the stoplight. How did the whistler do with the TFSR off? Did the alert distance increase dramatically on the pro78se? The reason I ask is, the ramp up on your whistler seems really strange, usually whistlers are known for smooth ramp ups when radar is in constant on mode. From your video it seems like the whistlers TFSR on really affected the K band performance as suggested by the sudden ramp up. I had similar sudden ramp ups on my XTR 690se (pre 2012 model customized by mike B to have TFSR) when I would turn TFSR on and approach k band signs. Thank for clearing this up.

from the 2012 ECCTG 2012 radar detector test. radardetectorforum.org/wiki
these are straight on testing results. tsr had little to no impact from testing k band straight away shots and not instant on. on the pro300 their was no noticeable difference in the tsr feature being on or off but there will be a huge difference if using tsr and instant on k band is used in your area. it slows the detector up to a full second and if k band is used in your area, i would leave tsr off(factory it comes on) and most states dont have tsr yet but bel decided to go ahead and make it the default so when you buy it and no tsr where you live, and there is alot of k band, i would leave it off. or you will miss alot of k band shots. but if your like me and no k band hardly and no tsr, i still put tsr on as it makes the k band filtering way better. i mean the pro 300 is eery quiet with tsr on and with tsr off, you will notice huge difference in filtering out false k band.
def. worth at least looking at their testing results. even with the results, the pro300 did very well and within 500 feet of the top performers. the pro500 was the biggest dissapointment only one detector scored worse in the course and that was whistler.
the s7 rx65 faired ahead of all of them except the sti driver and sti plus. all were dead on shots no off axis. one thing to note...im glad i didnt waste money on the magnum...on these tests, the pro300 did well enough to not justify spending 200 extra dollars for a minumal gain. I LEARNED 1 THING...RDR OFF RULES AS SHOWN in testing the band segment of the s7rx65 and sti plus with rdr on/off with band segment is the way to go whether straight on testing or off axis, the old s7 rx65 proved top 3 all day long with the rdr off and usa mode. where the usa mode on the new m4 pro300 did little to nothing compared to the s7 rx65 with rdr off when in usa mode.
ill wait for the next gen of rd units that will allow the unit to have band segment with rdr on/off like the sti and the rx65 s7. this proved a huge difference from long range testing.

Just a few observations I had on these tests.

"straight shot" ? actually if you look at the testing course carefully there was a noticeable bend in the road at about 1500 ft before the tree line and it looks like there was also a slight elevation rise there too.

Then a little bit further down the road there was a line of trees that blocked the road and a majority of the radar signal as the road took a wide bend away from the course.

It also appears the radar operator skewed and angled his antenna to the side of the road a bit as the radars audio Doppler sound was varying before the tree line.

They no doubt picked this course for this exact reason as a straight shot would show all units with far more range and it would be far less practical to do then.

It also appears the radar operator skewed and angled his antenna to the side of the road a bit as the radars audio Doppler sound was varying before the tree line.

The speed display was constant but the audio was varying further off and on down the road and it wasn't from the car's adjusting their speeds either.

even with these limitations I approve of the course but next time I wish they would try a wide interstate highway working out of a rest stop.

given that the road was very curvy and and had trees on either side ALL the R/D's performed quite acceptable as they picked up both k and ka band signals out of sight of the radar car and far ahead of the clocking zone.

even so the test was enjoyable to read and still gave some valuable info and I appreciate the effort that went into it.
