    Default RX65 Disassembly

Guys, I have a 3 year old RX65, been a cracker detector to date, (saved my butt too many times to count !), but has recently started displaying the dreaded 'service required' message, but no 'self cal' message. Works OK for a little while after turning off and on again. Firmware version is 3.6.

I want to open the unit. examine it, and clean it out with suitable electronic component cleaner but I am having a minor problem opening the case which I'm sure some of you guys can help with.

Basically, after taking out the two screws the case seems to be held together only by the red plastic wrapped around the information display. I can't figure out how to release this bit of red plastic, and I don't want to damage it !

Can someone give me some advice on this ?

    Much thanks, Blackjack

    P.S. I have a solid electronics background.

Yes, did that and no problem getting the screws out, also was able to remove the bit of purple plastic that is in front of the horn antenna.

It is the other end I'm not sure about, the bottom of the case is quite loose but doesn't seem to want to release from the curved red plastic that covers the information display. I must be missing something really simple, I am assuming that there are only two screws holding the case together.

    Cheers, Blackjack

Hey, great pics, should be useful. I was wondering if anyone had been able to 'acquire' a circuit diagram. Seems very strange that my RX65 worked perfectly well for 2 years and then for no obvious reason suddenly starts flashing these 'service required' messages, that seem to get progressively more frequent.

I don't believe it's a firmware related problem, more likely some electronic component is failing or 'aging', or wrongly spec'ed, or some dirt or dust has got into the unit. Seems BEL doesn't know what is causing it either or they would have fixed it by now, certainly giving them enough bad press.

Anyway, still need to get the bottom part of the case off properly, I suspect the red rear bit of plastic is just clipped in but I still need to remove it without damage.

Cyberblot, do you have a photo of the rear curved red bit of plastic ?

What I had done Months ago to remove the Red Cover is lift the top area just slightly and pulled forward/toward you.

To put it back on, screw everything back together first before snapping in the red cover.

Much thanks, that's the info I needed, ......I just didn't want to break anything as I need this device to keep me out of shyte when I'm canning my 350Z.

Interestingly, today I switched from using Ka band International to Ka band USA to see what would be the effect here. (I live in New Zealand). Well, firstly it did alert to the radar units in the police cars, and it seemed much more sensitive, but it also gave a couple of falses.

More interesting was the tec display (which I have on all the time), which seemed to provide increased resolution, i.e. in Ka Int. it would show 34.7 GHz but today in Ka USA mode it showed 34.728 Ghz, and in the two false instances it showed 36.xxx and 38.2xx (x = number I can't remember).

Going to test this mode some more as the increased sensitivity should provide increased slowing time.
