RX65 mounting

I read something about MEM-TEK saying that the new RX65 antennas work better if you tilt the detector downwards

however, my detector tilts UPWARDS. The way the suction cup mount is situated, if you lock it in place on the last notch, it leaves some slight clearance between the detector and the windshield, so the whole thing tilts up until the detector rests against the windshield.

1. how do i deal with this and
2. how do you guys mount your detectors?

also, i was wondering how i could tell if i had an S4 or M4 antenna

Get a pair of needlenose pliers and carefully bend the metal mount until the Rx is level, or slightly downward. You will know the unit is adjusted correctly when the two tabs at the recieving end of the Rx are resting against the windshield. All I would add is be sure to take your time and do it right. Once it's done you'll be good to go for as long as you own the detector.

The RX65 works great mounted high. Laser detection is not a concern because if it detects laser it's aleady aimed at you and you can't outbreak it. The RX65 is not a steller performer against detecting laser. If that a concern buy a jammer.

You can adjust the detector by bending the bracket up or down. Remove the RD first. You want the RD as level as possible and the front of the RD has to rest against the winshield or it will continue to slide up or down. There is another forum on this site to help you further. "Mounting"

what about a visor mount? i dive a 2006 camry, and the visor is tilted at an angle so the RD would actually be tilted about 10 degrees downards if i mounted it on the visor.

^^ That would be about an ideal angle for the RX65. The problem with the visor mount is that it makes it darned near impossible to access the buttons atop the RX65.

1. That windshield mount is made of thin metal, it bends quite readily but its very easy to make a mistake so be careful. Keep making small adjustments is the key. Remember you can move your RX65 back and forth a few notches also, I have to have mine on the last but one notch to get the requisite 15 degree forward tilt.

2. Mine is just below the RVM as the blue tint in my Suburban affects performance. The higher the better in my experience and it picks up Laser quite well too.

The truth is that if you want more downward angle, bending the bracket won't help too much. The bracket pivots on the suction cups until the detector touches the windshield. If you bend the bracket to have less angle, you're also moving the detector away from the windshield so the bracket will just pivot more until it touches the windshield at about the same angle.

For both of my Bels I went to the craft store and bought some of those little clear rubber feet you put on the bottoms of picture frames to keep them from sliding on the wall and put them on the front of the detector. At first I did it so it wouldn't bang against the windshield over bumps but it also means you might only have to use the third notch on the bracket instead of the last one and you'll have an easier time getting the right angle.

Also, make sure your suction cups are FIRMLY against the windshield. They'll hold the detector up while still being very "loose" on the glass, so push out all the air you can to lift the bracket up higher.

Now, that guy made it so the detector hangs under the mount and still touches the windshield, which would just make the angle worse. I built it so the bracket is higher and the detector touches the piece of metal. The bracket is screwed directly to the same surface the detector touches, so there's a lot more downward angle for any given notch on the bracket.
