    Default time to upgrade...

    hi all,

well, i had the joy of the OPP taking my

i should have known better and spent more to get a better unit.

i am looking at the STI. i have one concern, when i got nailed the cobra did not go off at all. as far as i can tell, it should have detected all current radar units out. so is the OPP using something new? or am i missing something? i can't tell if the STI covers a band that the cobra did not.

the OPP were in a moving vehicle in onward traffic.

It didn't go off because it was detected by a radar detector detector, not a radar gun. The STI, Redline, and STIR do not emit anything that would be detected by an RDD, wheras the Cobra can be picked up from a considerable distance.

welcome to the forum, glad to have you here, there is going to be plenty of members who will be happy to help you out and answer any questions you may have.

there are many reasons that the cobra didn't go off, it just doesn't have the same detection quality of that of a Whistler, Valentine, or Belscort.
The Sti Driver is a great detector but I always suggest spending the extra $30 and getting the Redline which has better range.

Also a remind to watch out on your links, linking to products sold on other sites is not allowed, with the exception of www.radarbusters.com

here is an authorized link for the detector you originally where asking about

What did the OPP Officer say when he pulled you over? Did you just hand it to him, or did you make him hunt for it? Sorry to hear your RD was stolen. A Redline is a solid portable RD that will allow you to avoid what you recently went through.

    hi,

the officer said i am stopping you for possession of a speed measuring warning device and for doing 107 km/h in an 80. so he definitely was able to measure my speed and he wasn't far away (we met at the top of a hill). i was surprised my detector didn't at least go off. we were close that i would have though almost any POS detector should have gone off .

most of my driving is long distance highway. the redline looks good for me since i rarely use a detector within the city.

since my detector didn't go off, i was wondering if there is something new out there that would make a new expensive detector obsolete....

    thanks!

and sorry about the bad link!

i just handed it over to him. about 3 years ago i lost my valentine one (which i thought was undetectable). i had the kids in the car, wasn't speeding, just happened to have left the thing on (it was on the floor) when i crossed the border from MN to Ont. told the officer i didn't have one and he just said i know you do and you don't want me to make a scene in front of your kids....

Laser is the most likely culprit which can defeat any RD, but then Cobras are crappy at detecting radar as well. If laser is an issue, look into a laser jammer like the Laser Interceptor. You'll want to install it stealthily and use it in a smart manner since I'm sure the OPP will have a field day if they figure out you have a jammer, considering how draconian they are when it comes to RDs.

But for your situation, a Redline will be a great RD for you. Unlike the V1 (and especially the Crapra), it IS undetectable by RDDs. Just keep it out of sight and avoid behavior that would indicate to the gestapo that you have an RD.

mike, just be smart. The Redline will make you electronically invisible to a Spectre. Your driving behaviour is also important. Whatever you do, even with your RD, never hit the brakes after a shot of I/O. In Ontario, it's better to take a speeding ticket over a SMWD. As for jammers, the Laser Interceptor is king around these parts. Some of the senior members may be able to offer pointers and suggestions. Just be smart with those too. I got hit on Friday on our way out of town by the OPP. I got the "Laser Atlanta" alert and message. Played it safe and drove by with no second look. For Ontario, your only choice is the STi Driver, Redline, STi-R Plus, or Escort 9500ci. I would rate the STi-R Plus the best out of all the ones I listed. They are pricey though. Look for Cliff from Laser Interceptor if you're going to get a good set of jammers. He's very knowledgable and his customer service is top notch. Good luck!
