Thread: V985 Question

    Default V985 Question

    Hi all, I'm new here...I just got a V985 from a friend who got a Passport 8500.

The detector powers up just fine, but it's silent. My friend called Bel and got a replacement speaker which he soldered in. But no dice....still silent. I took it apart and re-soldered it in a nicer manner (he doesn't have as much practice as I do ). Anyway, it still has no sound. I've done a search and I saw someone mentioned some SMD resistors. I found two, right by the speaker solder points, one large, one small.

Does anyone know what the values should be? My meter claims that both are 29kOhm.

Any other suggestions? I plan on powering it up with it open and checking to see if any voltage signals are getting through to the speaker leads. For some reason the detector won't power up on my 12VDC bench power supply (Anyone know the operating current? I know the fuse is rated at 1A, and my supply is variable up to 2.5, so I kept the current ~250-500 mA).

    Great forum BTW!

I know this sounds really stupid, but do you have the volume up? is there anything in the ear piece?

Hey SmartAas....I haven't been on SC in a long time....haven't seen ya around.

Yes, I've checked the volume....I can send it all the way up to 8 or 9 and still hear nothing.

Visually it sends out all the right cues....all the bands work, etc. It's just very silent

Welcome to the board. Maybe that's why he sold it to you. Did you plug headphones in or an ear piece to see it it works that way?

Well, he gave it to me for free...so I wasn't going to complain

Where can you plug in an earpiece? The only jack I could find is the power-in jack.

I did manage to power the puppy up on my bench supply....14V and 150 mA seemed to make it happy.

My friend bought it used, and he said it made sound for about 2 months before it went into mime mode.

    Cheers

Only has the power outlet. No external audio, dam thing is already loud as it is. I worry when the day comes my speaker fails, I only use level #1, wonder what everyone else uses and why the speaker fails. I know even on half volume level it is VERY loud and would not be surprised if that was the cause.

I am sure people know to adjust volume press and hold, if going in wrong direction, i.e. getting too loud, release and press and hold again nd the volume will lower, point is you do not have to cylce all the way up to ear piercing levels of full audio, ouch.
