Escort measurments

Hi all, Im new to the boards as you can see, but I have an X50 coming to me through amazon.com... I live in the only state where it is illegal for radar detector usage among motorists. I am looking for the measurment specs of this device. I am looking for Length-Width- and thickness...

My plan is to create a housing for the detector so I can be able to switch it off whenever I encounter a Leo on the off chance that they may be using a Spectre unit. If i make it look like another aftermarket mod, then it will be more likely to slip past initial inspections...

Here are the dimensions listed in the manual (in inches):
1.25 H x 2.85 W x 5.32 L

However, these dimensions don't account for the power cord being attached. You probably need to add at least another 0.25 in. to the width to accommodate the power cord. The power cord attaches to the right side of the detector.

Instead of making a case for it. You could get this to hide it:

On a side note, most VA members here use the Bel STI Driver. It is much better suited for avoiding RDDs as it has shielding built in to reduce RF leakage. You may want to get it instead of the X50. http://www.radarbusters.com/products...sti_driver.asp

It's supposed to arrive today sometime and all I planned to do was switch the device off when cops were detected. I am familiar with the roads near me and where the cops hide and they are anal about the 55mph zones so I just want a heads up if they are actually there or not. Nothing more frustrating than knowing that time could have been saved by adding another 10mph. Also, cross country trips on lonely open roads will be better for me now as well. Lastly, I dont really have another 150.00 to spend on a detector and so I'll just have to make due. If a lot of V1 users in Virginia dont have issues, then I should be relatively ok.

Radar detector is pretty much useless on the "lonely open road". YOu still need a rabiit or your dead meat with instant on.

I think I understand what you guys are talking about. Now, im only taking a guess here, but is a rabbit what some refer to as a pigeon? Basically someone ahead who will trip the speed trap and allow people with detectors to get a heads up where otherwise they wouldnt stand a chance?

Exactly. Your risk in Va with an X50 is pretty low. Just don't put it in the middle of the windshield with the cord hanging down... Heck you could do that, and if pulled over, keep the rear seat folded, unplug it and throw the RD back into the trunk and throw up the rear seat as you come to a stop

VA doesn't have any spectre units that can be confirmed, they are still using good ol VG-2 which most (all?) new RDs come with the option to turn the VG-2 Protection on. Basically if the RD receives a VG-2 signal it will alert you but will stop receiving radar warnings. As soon as the VG-2 theart is gone it will return to normal operation.

As far as getting pulled over, toss it somewhere quick

and I would suggest a hardwire so that way you don't have any cords dangling down from your front window to the cig. lighter/power plugin. 8)

I made sure to purchase the hardwire kit. I am now trying to find places to install the detector where even if pulled over, it would be nearly impossible to discover. Im talking about some James Bond, Mission Impossible kinds of things here.

when i was traveling through VA i got pulled by an unmarked cop who paced me at 83. It was night time and I had my RD hardwired at the very top of the windshield right of the mirror. The cop shined his flashlight on my windshield but did not see it. Its a great spot if you have a tint strip and they won't see it inside your car unless he got on his knees.

Glad you said that. I was thinking of going with a tint strip and just cutting out a piece just wide enough for the detector's front antenae. I know I need something dark up there to make everything blend in or I might just go with the old fashioned mirror strip. The trouble I am faced with is daytime driving. A cop can get lucky just glancing over at the wrong moment and seeing your detector through the front windshield or he may just pull you over to make sure of what he saw.... You never know.
