The acronym RADAR stands for Radio Detection and Ranging. Door proximity sensors, security sensors, Cobras etc are NOT RADAR. Yes they emit microwave frequencies which may fall into the same spectrum. And yes they may sense that an object is within their field, but they DO NOT Range.
Ranging is a data gathering capability to measure speed and distance. Police RADAR DO Range, i.e. the Fastest/Closest capability on many units. As soon as the door openers at CVS, Kroger etc. begin flashing an alert that the speed of your shopping cart is "Too Fast", you can start calling them RADAR.

Many door opener models do in fact qualify under your definition, because they both detect objects and some units can detect proximity (as you mentioned in your post). If the unit can distinguish between a person far away and an object close by and either open or not open based on that (which they do) then they are in fact ranging.Originally Posted by microbb

They cannot distinguish between a hand two inches in front of them or a human 6 feet away. They also cannot judge the speed of the objects in their field. The just look at a signal level reaching a threshold and trigger.

I'm aware of how sophisticated the systems are, as I design infrared detection devices for a living.
Now as to relevance to the conversation. It revolves around the economics of the detector industry itself and technological advances. Falses are the number one reason that detectors are sitting in closets and not on dashes. Initially the X-band sensors and now the K-band variety. Perhaps you don't have the experience, but for many years K-band was always a patrol.
Just a funny little anecdote, I used to commute a major interstate at a period in time when no detectors could distinguish between X & K band because K-band was just being introduced, and detectors manufacturers had yet to respond. A section of the interstate had a hill about two miles in length with an overpass about half way down the hill, and another overpass at the bottom. Half way down the hill the State Police would set up an X-band trap behind some pillars, and at the very bottom a brand spanking new K-band behind some pillars. The commuters were used to seeing "the morning" trap at it's usual spot and would speed up after passing it, especially those with radar detectors. As these X-band units were high powered a detector would continue to alert for a long time after passing them. The state made a lot of money in that little cherry patch because the X-band unit blinded the detectors. And no, the X-band car never moved, his purpose was to be a drone, so they could nail detector users.
The current state of affairs is that patrols have been hiding in these microwave rich environments collecting revenue in the same manner as in my anectdote. The 9500 is the ONLY detector that can possibly bring an end to that, and I say that knowing I will probably never own one as I live in a false free area. I have driven in K-band rich false areas with the V1 and it is not enjoyable.
What the V1 trolls think about the 9500 matters not to me, it is what Mike V thinks about it that is really important. I want him to stop whining, get his head in the game, and produce a detector with superior Ka ability. And here I'll be a stickler, another 9dB is needed at 35.5gHz. Give me 9dB and I'll plunk down $1K for the box, and I really don't care whether it has GPS or not.
Little bells should be going off in Mike V's head, people are now happily paying more for an Escort dash mounted detector than for the V1. I honestly never thought I'd see the day, but it's here.
