New member from Hong Kong

Hi everyone

I am new to this group but not new to radar detectors. (But thus far the forum has been very helpful with my learning about radar usage in Hong Kong!) Does anyone know if laser shifters are legal in Hong Kong?

I am originally from Canada and have been using radar detectors since 1984. My first RD was from Beltronics way back when. I guess the funniest story I have to tell, is back in the 1980s when I got careless with speeding. It was in Ontario (RDs illegal in Ontario) when InstantOn radar was first being used in on-coming traffic . I was all alone at night on a 2 lane highway against oncoming traffic. There was no one around except one car heading towards me. My instinct said "slow down just in case this is a police car." I didn't trust my instinct and moments later my Whistler went off at the top end of the scale. The policeman suspected I had an RD, searched the car and I got busted.

I took it easy for a while and six months later, gorgeous fall day, pulled out my old Bel for a country drive back to the city. Came over the top of a hill on an empty back road, bang - hit with instant-on again. Made the mistake of hitting the brakes too fast... Cop suspected an RD, searched the car and I lost it. As I drove home kicking myself I couldn't help but think I'd seen that cop before. I got home that night, checked a copy of the old ticket and sure enough... the same policeman confiscated the RD from me six months before... exactly to the day!

My next set-up was a front mounted Escort and rear mounted Passport with an external speaker embedded under the headrest cover of the driver's seat. I had lightly tinted windows, kill switches and a custom made visor to hide the Escort. The set-up worked wonders for me for years and I also trusted my instincts. No tickets.

Now I'm in Hong Kong with a Passport X50. Thinking of upgrading but am wondering if laser shifters are legal in HK? Does anybody know?

I like your story because you divided your story up into paragraphs. Most newbies just write one big one. I don't know if laser jammers are legal in HK but I do know that that should not play a role in whether you decide to purchase a jamming system. Last time I checked, speeding is illegal too. Have you started looking into any jammer systems yet?

I have no idea about Hong Kong and I doubt anyone here does. Also, just let me say, becareful about any information you get because you need to read the actual law to be 100% sure... otherwise you are just going off of someones word/translation... which may or may not be entirely accurate.

My concern about a radar jammer is that the penalties in Hong Kong are brutal... huge fine and possibility of prison sentence depending on the circumstances from what I understand. (I might be wrong but this is what I'm hearing from friends.) Apparently, the law would rule "illegally broadcasting a radio/radar wave without a license and obstructing justice."

Meanwhile, an RD is legal in HK. Yes, speeding is illegal, but using an RD to prevent speeding tickets balanced against a very illegal radar jammer, I think I'll stay away from the radar jammer. The laser shifter legality in HK, not sure. The laser license plate covers are illegal, which makes me think the laser shifters are illegal, too.
