Question about Laser transponder/receiver heads
Sorry if covered before but nothing showed in my search attempts. Is there a film or some product that can be placed on the laser sensor, such as a screen protector for an iPod or nav screen, that is replaceable and would protect the lens from rocks, debris and road grime that would not hinder the performance?

actually that is a really good question. it might not only help with road grime, but some of the water getting to the units and making them go bad over time!
I have something in mind but need someone with a gun to verify. Hate to find out the hard way!

I have some tests coming up, I'll see if i can dig some up and try it.
even if it works, i'd still want others to try it before saying it's okay though.
plus, not sure how they would hold up in rain, etc.. since they are mainly for phones and stuff.
another option, the 3M clear headlight cover material, it's designed for exterior use....?

I have it on my iPhone and it is thin, clear and very durable. Not sure if will stay on in a car wash

I originally thought about the 3m lens film but it seemed too thick. But now there are some new car finish films from 3m and other companies that is very thin. If anyone has access to one of these facilities I'm sure they would give/sell a piece of scrap for testing.
I've been thinking of this for a while since the cost of replacement heads is so high and companies close(cough cough...Lidatek) that I'd like to maintain them as long as possible before have to replace with an all new system.
RacerX: You should try out invisible shield. You can pick them up for iPods and stuff.
THe only problem I can see is that when IS sets it tends to warp slightly.
That's a very good question. I've always been concerned about the plastic heads, right in the line of fire for rocks and sand. As they get scratched they will lose their focus slowly and become less effective.
I suppose anything that does not block infrared light should work. I would think the material for a clearbra used for the same reason on a car's hood and headlights would be perfect, if you can find a small sheet.
This would be a great test for someone with a good IR camcorder to test if certain materials block or not.
Actually, the received signal is much weaker than the transmitted signal, so if it did block, you would immediately notice your jammer not picking up a gun as effectively or at all.
