How does this thing update it's database? And how current/accurate is the database? Where do they get the info from?

Here is the reply directly from Navalert.
Updates come from official government websites and sources, as well media releases and data logging personal (known customers that gather the data )
We often have cameras in the unit that are not even activated yet, as well the ability for the customer to add there own location will ensure the product would never become useless. Updates will change weekly as cameras are being installed in many cities every few weeks, as well the unit is programmed to alert customer to update from the website every 14 days.
We have put considerable time and money into the unit, we have hand plotted over 15,000 schools as well as 2000 cameras and have already began development of a wireless blue tooth enabled unit which you will see spring 2007.
Updates are pretty easy actually.
it comes with a driver disk to install a USB driver for the Navlert.
Once installed, you do the following:
you go to the Navalert website (Navalert.com) and download the free update.
plug in the USB cord to the side of the unit, and move the switch to D/L and plug it into the USB port on the computer.
Click the update file and a box pops up to install.
it gives you the option to keep or remove any custom locations.
it does the update and tells you it's done.
unplug and that's it.![]()
I was just looking on thier website and it looks like only the mayor cities are mapped. Is there any way to see whats actually in their database for a certain area?
I do like the fact that their from Canada, that will save me on customs![]()
i would PM navalert, since he is actually handling the database, and can give you a better answer.
Right now all cities with red light cameras or speed cameras are mapped - all cities over 50,000 population are mapped for school zones as well - in anyone purchases a unit and has and data that is missing or incorrect they can submit that data and it will be adjusted within 72 hours - we have not had anyone report a camera to date.Originally Posted by Msan
We normally have these cameras in the databse before the camera is IN THE GROUND!
