I took my Valentine Back
I'm sure I'll get the crap kicked out of me for saying this but here I go anyway!
I tested my V1 for a couple of weeks. It was very annoying with all the false beeps. In some cases I would get 4 or 5 false beeps on one intersection. I was even getting laser alerts from certain brake lights in front of me. It was funny to watch the brake light come on and my V1 would go mad.
I tried everything to improve the V1. I followed all the directions using all three modes of the detector. Even some of the muting changes postings.
I decided to remove it and take it back to Valentine ONE. I got it back within the 30 day money back return policy. They called me that same day and told me there was going to be a $50.00 charge because I cut a wire on “Direct Wire Power Adapter”. I told them that I was willing to buy a new power adapter which is listed on their web site at $13 retail and I thought the $50 was a little too much. She said there was nothing she could do about the charge because it was not returned in “new condition”. I had it boxed up with all the packing that came with it. It was boxed in perfect condition. I did cut a wire to make the power adapter shorter when I wired it to my fuse box.
I asked her to transfer me to Mr. Valentine and she came back on the line and told me he was in a meeting and he said the return charge “is what it is”.
I tried to continue talking to her and asked her why $50? Why not charge me for a new power adapter which only cost $13? She got agitated, defensive and quickly said she will note our conversation on my account and hung up on me.
I tried to contact Mike Valentine. I even sent him a fax. He never got back with me .. YET.
I have an Escort 9500ix ON its WAY. I am looking forward to trying the GPS and other up-to-date functions.
Escort gave me a $80 trade-in for my very very old detector.
IMHO without GPS The Valentine 1 IS OLD SCHOOL
Peace, Ben

Re: I took my Valentine Back
Sorry the V1 didn't work for you. Some people prefer to have a quiet detector. If someone in CS hung up on me like that I would make a point to never do business with them again. That is inexcusable.
-
Re: I took my Valentine Back
LOL....I have seen this post before, this is some funny stuff. I have done biz with V1 for a long time and never had anything even close to this happen....

Re: I took my Valentine Back
Well, you tried it and didn't like it. The V1 isn't for everyone. It is an excellent radar detector and there are other sources of radar besides law enforcement that the V1 will pickup and report. There are ways to mitigate the "false" alerts that you can find in these forums. I don't know if you drive through an urban radar jungle or through hiways full of drones. Did you try the k-band automute? The V1 is also exceptionally sensitive to laser too, so it generates alerts to non LEO sources. This is documented in the forum too.
The customer service charge does sound excessive, so I understand that frustration.
I'm sure the 9500ix is a very good radar detector. However, you may want to read the forum for other user's experiences and check out the guys of lidar tests. You'll find that there is no perfect radar detector, they all have strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully the 9500ix fits your needs the best.
The only bash on your post, is that you have 16 or so posts that have the same message. It's clear that you are not happy with the the V1 product or their customer service.
-
Re: I took my Valentine Back
I'm sorry the V1 didn't work for you. However, just because you couldn't handle the false alerts, doesn't mean the V1 is old school. It is still the best RD available and has better detection range against all radar bands than the ix. But like the previous posters have said, the V1 isn't for everyone. You have to be able to tolerate false alerts if you want to use the V1. I hope everything works out with your ix. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about it.

You're right,
I have been very upset after I got off the phone with their customer service person.
I expect I will have to protest the excessive charges. It's just 50 bucks and I'll get over it. I can't remember the last time I was talked to the way Valentine's supervisor talked to me. She really had a short fuse. I was trying to get her to charge me for the $13 part and for her to give me an explanation as to why I was being charged $50 restocking.
Their product pages state: "30-day Money-Back Guarantee.” There are no conditions there, nor an asterisk pointing to one.
It's not going to mess up my Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all :D
BTW .. If keeping my $50 is good for them, me giving them $50 worth of bad advertising is my way of getting my money’s worth.

Doing business with a company is fine as long as you haven't had occasion to get them angry with you. Sure they are happy as long as you’re buying their stuff and not taking it back.
Like I said, I have been upset with the way they treated me but it's not going to mess up my Christmas.

Sorry about your experience. I don't blame you for returning the RD. When I have such experience, I do the same. Even though they charged you the $50, they still lost a sale and a customer.
I think you made a good choice with the 9500ix. I have one to use in town because of the redlight cameras. I really like the 9500ix. I love the blue display.

Thank you for the support. Many times people take advantage of companies. They buy stuff for just the weekend and take it back the next week. That's not the case here. I had to buy it from their On-Line store and the only way I could find out if I like the unit is to use for a few weeks. That's why their website offers a free 30 day trial.

I am a big V1 fan, but this is wrong. Had they charged you $13 then I would say that was a fair compromise.

What I am saying is I have never had a problem with Valentine, and I don't sell them. I have had mine for 5-6 years and sent in for repairs and updates and found V1 to be very good on the CS parts of it. However I have not tried to get a full refund either, and if I did I would not send the direct wire kit back cut in half. But I guess thats just me......
Also you should not have direct wired the V1 until you were sure you were going to keep it.

I ordered a CD from Valentine. The woman did not have the most personable attitude on the phone. I called back a few days later to get a tracking number and Mike answered the phone. I told him I place an order with a woman "I assume that is your wife?" He said, "No, that's not my wife." I told him that this woman has a reputation on the interent.....as "that lady." So at least he has some feedback on her!
Two points made here; you shouldn't have cut the wire until you were sure you were keeping it, AND they should have only charged you $13 and everyone would be happy. Dumb move on their part as far as having a good CS reputation on returns.

Re: I took my Valentine Back
On the radar detector topic:
If you cant stand the *noisy* radar detector then you should buy a cobra, it gives you the feeling of being protected, its quite but thats all you get, the feeling of being protected, nothing else.
On the customer service topic:
Thats pure bull****, I love their detectors but their customer service is terrible in my opinion.
I had an incident my self about a month ago when I sent in my 3.813 for a tune.
I asked them to do certain things to it (change the bottom sticker that keeps falling off). Not only they didn't, they sent me back my radar detector in a ripped to **** box with my cigarette lighter adaptor broken.
Way to go Mike

You're right,
I should not have wired it in. I was too sure that it would work good after reading some of the good posts. I only cut a wire to make it a little shorter and was happy to pay for a complete new "direct wire adapter" ($13 retail new on their website). All they have to do is replace one 12" red wire. The adapter was in perfect condition. I'm sure someone will see it in their order someday.
You have to admit that the Valentine 1 is behind times not using GPS? Valentine has made a mint on a peice of equipment that is falling behind other brands. They are living on their past ratings. More buyers will go toward the GPS units. It's the future.
Don't be angry with me, I'm telling the truth so others can be forewarned.
Cheers

Re: I took my Valentine Back
I only use the V1 for highway driving and it kicks ass. In the city I only use my Beltronics V955. If I used the V1 in a city or populated area I would throw the damn thing out my window.

Hey no problem on my end, I have to say though the GPS feature on the ix is not for me. I tend to lean more toward the raw performance of the V1 and Redline, however thats my choice, hope the ix works well for you and have a great holiday season and a happy new year!

Re: I took my Valentine Back
I hate bad customer service. I had a recent experience at compusa while trying to purchase an item. The guy was so nice to start till I can't find the exact model of the item I was looking for. Tried to sell me a different model at regular price with extended warranty. Since I was not sold to it, he left me for another customer who just walked in without even saying goodbye. All they care for are their commissions on what they can sell. Once they think they can't profit from you, then there you go- their attitude change. Thumbs down for valentine on this. I think, one of the most important aspect of doing business is good customer service. I would not buy an item if I know their customer service/support is bad.
By the way, I have a 9500ix and I really like it. Congrats on your purchase.

Re: I took my Valentine Back
I must have a rare V1 because I don't get any false radar readings on mine.
every time mine beeps there is radar near by. whether it is from CVS or an LEO it tells me there is radar near by and which direction it is coming from.
I use it all the time in the City in the Burbs and on the highway and I drive a lot of miles each month.
my V1 came with this really cool option the mute button and volume knob. i can control the main volume and the muted volume level. I even added the remote display which also has a mute button which I keep in a visible location near my fingertips for easy muting.
now for the CS yea that was kind of crappy but they probably have a fixed price for V1's returned damaged and you returned yours damaged however small the damage or cheap it is to fix you returned it damaged.
-
Re: I took my Valentine Back
Props for having the balls to post your negative V1 experience here, especially knowing you would get hammered for it. :D The V1 is good, but it is far from perfect. I use one only because I work from home and don't have a daily commute anymore ... and it is better than anything else in a couple of areas that are important to me. To me its biggest flaws are no permanent muting of K band like Escort's Automute and laser falsing. I'm pretty sure mine gets laser falses from the sun sometimes.

Re: I took my Valentine Back
For all of the good reviews and famed performance of the V1, why don't they have a bigger market share, and instead have such a small market share even when compared to brands with similar prices?
The answer is simple:
They run the company like a bunch of clowns. Nickle and diming people to try to make a profit even on returns, customer service nitemares posted on sites all over the Internet, etc. If Mike is letting his wife's attitude destroy the company, then she isn't the problem: He is. Ultimately its his name and reputation on the line.

I agree, putting a see-you-next-Tuesday in charge of your customer service is a bad move for a company that is concerned about its future. Even if this woman is your wife, you find something for her to do that is going to contain the damage.
The more I read about incidents like these, the more convinced I am that Mike Valentine is simply riding the wave until it hits the beach, at which point he plans to simply step off the board and walk away into the sunset.

Clowns claim bankruptcy like Escort, Bel, etc. Clowns don't admit problems that exist like failure to alert to quick trigger. They don't have a bigger market share because they don't sell their detectors at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, truck stops, and every other dump retailer. If Valentine Research has such a small market share and such crappy customer service then why have they been around since 1992 (17 years)...because they sell a superior product with excellent customer service.
I have owned two V1s in my life and I sent one of my V1s in for one software upgrade which only cost me shipping to them...no charge from them. I sent it in again after the one year warranty expired and they gave me a hardware and software upgrade which only cost me shipping to them. They have excelled when it comes to customer service if you ask me.

Defend them all you want, it seems not a week goes buy where Valentine customer no-service does something stupid. Just because the product is great doesn't mean one should be blind to mediocre service. Maybe it simply goes hand in hand with being a zombie.
They've managed to be around for 17 years.... so what? Obviously they aren't doing well enough to hire good customer service reps. I can point out companies that have been around much longer who are infamous for poor customer service, and its usually due to a monopoly with a particular product or feature, as is the case with V1 due to patents.

Have you ever owned a V1, I didn't think so. Your jumping into a thread you know very little about the product your so quick to bash...

Re: I took my Valentine Back
This is not about the product. This is about customer service. You don't need to own a product in order to read complaints about the company's service on various web sites. As a matter of fact, that's a reason not to own a product and is one of the reasons I won't buy on
Its apparent over the course of months of reading cases of bad customer service that some will defend the company no matter how badly they treat someone. I know I'm not going to wipe the rose shade off anyone's glasses.
-
Re: I took my Valentine Back
I have never owned a V1
Never
But I have owned several Bel and Escort products.
All of them have had some issue or another. Some of them have been caused by me and some of them have been caused by design.
Why do I keep going back for more?
Customer Service. The issues have always been worked out fairly and satisfactorily.
If the product sucks I wouldn't even waste my time except to warn others.
What I have learned from this site and the responses from Valentines Customer Service has lessened my interest in their product.

OK, so you have never owned a V1. Well I own one and Im telling you that they have great CS from my point of view. I have used V1 CS many times over the years and found them very good to work with. If I had a bad encounter with them I would let you know that as well....I also own other RDs, so when compared with Escorts CS they about the same. Don't judge Valentine on some of these post because I don't think half this stuff dint happened as it was told here.

I would say you have an unusual V1 if you don't get any false alerts. Because they even say in their book that you will receive false laser from some brake lights and radar from door openers. It might be that you have the X turned off? Or there are some post on the net where they program the V1 to mute out many false alarms. I didn't feel good about reprograming the V1.
I would expect to pay for any damage that I caused to their product. I think she didn't like me telling her that her product was very annoying with all the false beeps! I told her the truth and I guess that was also my mistake. I should have told her that I just can't afford the unit right now. She might have had mercy on me ;)

There is more than one lady that answers the phone. The one that treated me so bad was the supervisor. Her initials are A. A. She is the one that has the last word. And she proved it by hanging up on me.
Peace

Re: I took my Valentine Back
No one here should be defending that lady that sometimes answers the phone at VR. She is *****y, moody, crabby and whatever other "y" you can think of. Her customer service is awful, period!

You said: "I don't think half this stuff dint happened as it was told here"
Sir, I was there on the phone with Valentine's supervisor (initials A.A.) and it happened just like I told you. I'm not going to slander someone's name or business for 50 bucks. The situation was partly my fault but only a $13 mistake. Good customer service would never have hung up on me while I was trying to understand why $50 and not let me buy a new adapter (listed new on their site for $13) She got the last word by hanging up on me while I was still talking.
Have you ever had someone hang up on you while you were still talking? That makes you angry and the person on the other end knows it hurt.
Please don't call me a liar because I don't really care about the 50 bucks. I'm going to protest the overcharge anyway with my credit card company. My story is just the way it happened.
Peace

Re: I took my Valentine Back
I agree with the OP here... its truw the fact that made it unprofessional was haging up on the phone... a good busness practice is never taking things personal...
In my book, haging up on someone is just childish...

Safe to assume it was his wife answering the phone?

Re: I took my Valentine Back
You didn't tell them about the cord? Then wanted a full refund? and you got bad karma by the office bull terra! whats the problem? Sounds normal to me unless your in Japan. Pretty funny really, I'm sure shes a right B.i.t.c.h would love to of been a fly on the wall at your end, I'm sure you would of been so nice and polite about dropping $50 bucks.
Next time be a bit more clever. Don't cut the cord.....If you do get a new cord @$13 before you send it back. Dude are you not embarrsed at you dumb arse post or is it about revenge. MMM no not revenge just a dumb arse post.
