I live in Houston... I went through the same debate. I decided on the Beltronics STI. It was between the V1,RX65, STI. All are great detectors. The reason I chose the STI was the filtering... a friend of mine has a V1 and it goes off like crazzzzzzzy with falses. I wish I had the arrows but thats the trade off that had to be made. The reasons I went with the STI over the RX65 are: I wanted the higher quality black casing (didnt want grey plastic) and I plan to do a hardwire install in my car and the STI comes with it already (which offsets the cost by $30 or so...).

If you dont mind the color of the RX65 and dont plan to do a hardwire then I would recommend it. You cant go wrong with the top 4 though. It all comes down to personal preference. I wish V1 had better filtering or STI had arrows lol.

BTW even with the STI in City NoX mode i still get a fair ammount of falses... i can only imagine how many I would get with the V1.

I've had the Passport SR7 for over two years in spec mode with X off. I got it because I wanted a built in unit and to monitor frequencies. Since I drive the same route daily I use spec mode and orientation to determine where the door openers are. I love this feature and it's saved me many times.

HPD uses laser a lot so I installed the ZR3 jammer with 2 by my front plate and 1 in back then veiled my headlights and plate covers. This system has not been tested against a real Lidar trap at this time so I don't have an opinion of how well it works.

Harris Country Sherrif (HCS) and DPS I've had special problems with. HCS has tricked me up using an exit and re-enter tactic with Instant on to bust me from behind in spite of using a rabbit. Another time DPS was pacing me from the feeder road or so they claim, I only got a warning. SR7 wasn't much use for either of these encounters.

I've considered getting an X50 for my Wrangler so I can monitor speedtraps when I'm not in the vette. I love my system and wouldn't tear it out yet but I've read so many good things about the STi that I may get one for the Wrangler instead. So I can give an opinion on that later.

Actually corection again. Several older DPS "truck enforcement" trucks are still running the K band unit. The DPS switch over to Ka is not 100% complete yet.

PS, "truck enforcement" trucks stop ANY vehicle on the road when an infraction id noted.

Agree 100% on the polluted with door openers but DO NOT TURN OFF X. X band is alive & well in Houston. It is still used by the Harris County Constable Departments. That is the only police force in the Houston area left running X I have encountered in the past 5 years. I have not seen it in instant on as most just leave it on all the time.

Your choice, miss some known real alerts on the streets or have a MUCH quiter radar detector.

Do you have a confirmed X hit from the constables? Or have you heard testimony about it? Any details.

I kept X on the SR7 for a year and routinely passed constables but only encounterd K, Ka. I never got an X that I could confirm was from any LEO. However, your scary claim would not suprise me since most of the constables seem poorly equipped.

My last confirmed X band hit in Houston was about 3 months ago. Constant on from a Constable. They do have some old equipment. Not like HCSO, Metro or HPD. Never forget, old equipment still works so some departments refuse to replace it until it breaks.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll get X turned on as soon as the vette gets out of the shop.

    Thanks

That is true, few DPS Troopers still run K band radar. I ran into one in Galveston. Would like to know if any of the folks living in the Houston area live near Spring or have CB's.
Outside Independence Hall when the Constitutional Convention of 1787 ended, Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."
