Default Ka appears as K from long distances?

New to radar detectors, but with the new car, I had to have one! got a second hand X50.

In any case, over the last week, I've had two cases of it picking up a K signal and then after a while, I see the LEO and the detector switches to Ka.

Does a Ka signal shift into a K signal over long distances?

Today on the way to work (in bumper to bumper traffic no less), I was getting IO K signals for about 2 miles before finally it switched to IO Ka. Super annoying in slow traffic! (since it would spike to full, I'd mute it, then it would die off, then repeat, over and over for like 15 minutes).

No, either your X50 is defective or, more likely, there were two different signals.

It sounds like you live in an area with K band radar drones, then ran into a LEO. The X50 has no programmable options to deal with these things. If you live in an area where they have these things, you might be better off upgrading to a 9500ix or V1 to deal with these things. Where do you live? They have them in the Bay area, Ventura County and Seattle that I know of.

I live in the Dallas area. This morning was on the Dallas North Tollway and I've driven the area before without any alert (well alerts with LEOs of course).

The one this weekend was in Oklahoma City.

ETA: looking at the link you posted, that's exactly what it was. On this highway they monitor the speeds with cameras and have displays to let you know how long it is until certain intersections. Of course those displays weren't working this morning.

Maybe normally I fly through those areas and don't notice the K hit?

Yeah, to really help block-out drones, the best bet is a 9500ix. The V1 you can program the mute to a high threshold, however, I have never been a fan of this tactic.

Something you can do is change the X50 to EXP mode, this way you can see the individual Ka/K signals AND their relative strength to one another.

I've already been about to switch to EXP mode... and buying a new RD isn't in the cards right now :0) Race parts ain't cheap!

EXP mode is by far one of my favorite features on any detector, the ability to show different signals and their relative strength is amazing in my book.

That will certainly help with the K-to-Ka switch (the X50 in the STD mode decides which it feels is the most important threat and shows that band, strength, and tone).

In EXP, it will still have the tone of the alert it feels is the most important, along with its band ID/strength... but it will also show all other alerts relative signal strength that its processing as well.

This wont do much for the muting aspect though... which is what the 9500ix would help with.

    Sounds like a faulty RD.

Nope. Lurked a bit, but spend most of my time on ricekiller.com and evolutionm.net.

Any way to test it? Supposedly it was just a couple months old, but it's got the V5 software (8500 X50), so it's a bit older.

It's pretty good at alerting me to grocery stores and CVS stores.
