When necessary is about as specific as you can get,
Even then, most firmware changes are to address manufacturing changes (or bugs in some isolated cases) and usually don't do anything to improve the performance of the detector.
As far as I know there is no schedule at all. Like others said here they make firmware changes based on manufacturing changes and since that has no connection with performance I would not worry about having the latest firmware. The only time I would be worried about firmware is if you are having an issue and VR corrected it with a newer firmware. So if this is the case you can call VR and describe what issue that may be and they will tell you if it should be sent in. Outside of that I only get interested in actual upgrades and you can always check for those on VR's web page by entering your serial number.
You can ask same question to MicrosoftThere are no updates unless there is a known issue.
