    Default Buying a V1

Okay, so, I got 2 tickets in 2 months, first one I did driving school.

second one, I am fighting right now - nasty one. to sum up - 91mph in a 65mph, on the 5 north cali. I had to pay a nasty fine of 415 dollars. I paid, if by chance I win, i will take that money to buy a V1 (or a 9500. . .)

I saw a V1 for 350 used on craplist, and I was seriously giving it some thoughts...

"V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.7 gives high performance on all radar bands. Also, it remembers your “mode” setting when shut off. Has stack of four LEDs on front panel for band identification. Front and rear laser.
Upgrade Recommendation: While this version is not quite up to today’s V1 standard for Ka, it’s almost always good enough, and always better than detectors from other makers. X and K performance is excellent. Upgrading merely to improve radar performance is not cost effective, in my opinion, unless you’re concerned about the POP Mode operating in your area. Upgrading does bring other benefits, including our latest laser warning (front and rear), which outperforms the competitors by a wide margin, and POP Protection. Also, you'll get the new Euro Mode"

So, I know its not the most updated one, how do I check for manufacturing dates? and sorry for my novice knowledge, but do V1's have any common issues? I had a x50 about 2 years ago, it froze ... I guess part of the contributing factor was the heat (120-130 degrees easy) since I live in phx, az. and I plan on hardwiring the V1 if I get it..

    comments, concerns welcome. thanks!

$350 for a 1.7 is ridiculous! I had a 1.7 a while back, it was alright. Doesn't have rear laser if I remember right. The 1.7's are manufactuered late90's, early 2000's I believe. If I were you I would just buy one direct from VR. They will take care of you if you do. Otherwise look for a 1.8, they run around $300-400 depending on version, age, condition etc.

Two things, the price is high and you need to get the serial number and call VR and check to see if its stolen.

I think you can buy refurbished units with all the lastest programming from VR for the near the same price as the one your looking at.

Buying a very old V1, that probably has very little chance of working properly, to save $50, makes zero sense.

That is actually the latest 1.7 which is a very good unit, compared to a 1.8 it is slightly weak on 35.5 and has a weaker laser sensor, has the older rear laser sensor, aside from that it is ghost free probably does not fall out of tune
(mine never has in 14 years) and just as hot on all other frequencies.

Further more 1.7's are much more dependable than 1.8's laser is the only thing that goes bad on mine.

As far as price I believe a unit should not sell for more than upgrading to a new unit.

If you were to click proposed upgrade price it would probably be $179,
so $220 would be a fair price.

    Manufacturing dates are here http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...ve-answer.html
    Probably a 440 to 599 MFG 1998 to 2001

With what version did they start drilling out the magnesium case? Weren't some early versions actually leak free, before they aerated the case for heat dissipation?

I'm looking into a Valentine and found a 3.813. I can get it for $175 plus the tune up price. I wouldn't pay more than 250 for a 1.7.
