No alert on the Pro-78 or V1

For those of you in nyc I was on the belt parkway W. ~1.5mile passed exit 4. It was at the second curve where NYPD usually does speed traps.

A leo in a marked crown vic was backed up perpendicual to the road. He had his radar gun out in front of his face aiming at me. But I never got a signal. There were two cars in front of me and one to the side. The pro-78(mounted next to RVM) was silent as I passed him with the gun still aiming. So I quickly turned it off and turned on the V1(mounted passenger visor). There was no rear detection either.

So what was he doing? I found it weird that he had the opportunity to pull the trigger at all the cars passing by but didn't and still had the gun to his face(not really good at recognizing what type but it was black

).

This was the second time that a similar event happened. When I was running just the V1 and just got off the highway there was a LEO off his motorcycle with a radar gun to his face but there was no signal. I was the only one on the road. I was going ~35mph approaching a 20mph zone. and he aimed the whole time up to when I passed him but no signal.

Could he have been using laser instead of radar? Did you see any optical lenses on his gun?

If he had the unit to his face it was most likely not a radar gun.

It would be a laser gun and the closer you are, the less likely your unit will alert as the Laser diameter is too small at short distances to be seen above the hood of your vehicle if he had a steady hand and was aiming at your licence plate.

For Laser , you need to be at 1000ft away for the diameter to be approx 3ft.

Distances further than 1000ft give the advantage to you.
Distances under 1000ft give the advantage to the LEO

I concur with Mike's take on the situation -- if he had something up to his face, it's not a radar gun, but rather a laser gun, and if you can see his face, your chances of detecting a laser beam are quite low.

A telltale sign of a laser gun is that it has one or (more often) two glass lenses on the front of it.

would I have gotten scatter from the people who got shot in front of me or back of me when I passed him with the V1 turned on?

So i guess he was smart picking a blind curve so he can shoot without a RD picking it up. I passed him doing 57mph with 50 psl :cry:. I usually get Ka at that corner from lazy ones that just stop parallel to the road and leave it Constant On.

the first situation the LEO was literally about 30 yards away from where he was able to first the front of my car. The second situation he was about 100yards away with a clear straight view of when I get off the highway.

It's called Instant on.

Just because a cop has a radar, it doesn't mean that it is necessarily on.

If it was Laser and he was aiming it low at the other cars, there would be no scatter for you to detect.

If he had a shaky hand and occasionally went for a headlight or grill area you may be lucky enough to see some scatter with the V1 but it is a longshot at best.

I have had a dozen or so Laser hits from a LEO and my Whistler unit alerted to all but 1 of them.

Again, distance has everything to do with it. The further away you are, the better.
