Default New here. Whistler fan. And a question.

Hi, I'm new to these Forums but am already impressed with the wealth of info and the quality of the posts.

I see in some posts Michael B is a Whistler resident expert. I hope he can help with a little problem. I've had my model 1788 for about 2 years and it seems to have let me down at a bad time. Got a ticket and the unit never made a sound. In retrospect, I hadn't really paid attention to the fact that the day before and up umtil I got cited the unit hadn't even falsed where it normally would have in the past. It runs the power-on self-test just fine. I have purposely tested it since then and it is detecting nothing. Anything I can do about this or is it a paperweight?

On another note, I am impressed with everything I've seen about the new XTR695except for the fact I can't get one. Anyone know if the 8/8/08 ship date is real? I feel naked out there without a working unit and I drive too much to wait around forever for "vapor-ware". I can get Amazon to overnight me a Pro78 (hopefully rev C, no way to tell) for about $150 but I really am interested in the newer unit.

Thanks in advance for any pointers or comments. Looking forward to getting to know you all in the near future.

im pretty sure he can fix it for you, depending on the date you purchased it i know whistler has a 3 year warranty on their new products. if its not covered under warranty i believe they charge a small fee for diagnosing the problem, plus however much it costs to fix your unit. if your looking for a temporary unit my xtr140 has been an excellent unit and often gives the same response time in the city as my pro 78, you can get them at autozone for around $50 or even cheaper online and even as low as $30 on ebay.

now if you have been bitten by the detector bug the xtr690 and the whistler pro 78 are definetly fun toys.

I agree. If you do want to get a Pro 78 ( I think I can say this) go on eBay, they have brand new Rev C's and they are Buy It Now, no bidding. With Standard shipping, it is ~$130, and I got mine if about 3-4 business days.

If Mike B. can't fix it, no one can!

    Sent you a PM

I will be happy to look at your unit.
If you want to hold our fot he XTR-695 you may wish to consider an XTR-140 as it is an excellant unit for the price.

No frills, No POP but good performance for under $50

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. Maybe not a bad idea to pick up an XTR140 while I wait. I can put it in my wife's car after the 695 comes out. I'll check my PM Michael.

    Hi cadzilla74,

    Welcome to the forum!

I am a huge Bel and Escort fan, yet I highly recommend the Pro78 or XTR-690 for those on a tight budget. The Ka band performance of these products is amazing given the low prices. A few extra bucks spent on a quality radar detector is well worth it considering the price of a ticket and increased auto insurance rates. The current "best bang for the buck" radar detectors:

    Bel Vector V940 or V955
    Whistler XTR-690 or Pro78

Aside from Bel and Escort radar detectors and the Valentine V1, the Whistler XTR-690/Pro78 and the new XTR-695 are the only other radar detector models which I completely trust with regards to their Ka band performance. Check out my Pro78 review:
