im pretty sure he can fix it for you, depending on the date you purchased it i know whistler has a 3 year warranty on their new products. if its not covered under warranty i believe they charge a small fee for diagnosing the problem, plus however much it costs to fix your unit. if your looking for a temporary unit my xtr140 has been an excellent unit and often gives the same response time in the city as my pro 78, you can get them at autozone for around $50 or even cheaper online and even as low as $30 on ebay.
now if you have been bitten by the detector bug the xtr690 and the whistler pro 78 are definetly fun toys.
