    Default RedLine vs. 9500ix (MN)

I did a search on this and couldn't find a post specifically comparing these two models, but I assume one has been done?

Anyway, I live in MN where we no longer have red light cameras nor speed cams. I own the 9500ix and have been very happy with it. My wife got a ticket two weeks ago and finally agreed to let me put a RD in her car too. I was all set to buy a 2nd 9500ix and now see this RedLine model.

If I understand correctly, the primary difference is the GPS on the 9500ix vs. longer range detection of the RedLine - is that correct?

Looking for some advice on which one to purchase, preferably from anyone who has owner both models.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Well, I don't own a Redline nor have I ever used one, but I do own a 9500ix and recently made the switch to a V1, which is almost the same switch in many ways (losing GPS function for extra sensitivity). Your understanding of the main differences between the IX & RL are correct: The 9500ix uses the slightly less sensitive M4 antenna with the GPS functions while the Redline uses the newer, more sensitive M3 antenna without the GPS.

Since redlight and speed cameras are not an issue where you live, your decision will come down to whether you want the quieter operation of the 9500ix via TrueLock or the greater sensitivity of the Redline. If false alerts are minimal where you drive, then by all means, step up to the Redline; you'll love the extra range. If you drive in urban environments often, then the 9500ix is still going to be your best friend in these situations as it will be SOOOO much quieter to live and drive with. Or, if you really don't mind getting occassional false alerts from a RD, then the Redline will suit you very well.

After using a V1 & 9500ix, I've realized that they each have their place. But, if I could only have one RD, I would take the 9500ix without hesitation.

    Well said Silverado12.

IMO nothing is better than the 9500ix for a windshield mount RD if you want quiet with good sensitivity.
I also have a RedLine and its sensitivity is truly amazing (more sensitivity than the IX, and a lot more off axis sensitivity), but does false a heck of a lot more.

Maybe give your wife the 9500ix and get a new RedLine for your self. :-)

i have noticed a big difference compared to my 9500ix. greater detection range and much better with off x-axis. i believe that it is difficult to say the redline "smokes" the 9500. they are made for different sytles of driving both preform well for what they were designed for. the 9500 is great for city driving, the redline is great for long trips on the highway. however the redline will still works well in the city just may be noisy sometimes and the 9500 is still a great RD on the highway it just is not quite as sensitive so there may be shorter reaction times. both should still give plenty of notice. IMO they are both top notch detectors and it depends on where you do most of your driving and what you are looking for in a detector.

CJR238 -- funny you say that ("give your wife the 9500ix and get a new RedLine for your self") -- that is my plan if I get the RedLine. Especially if the RedLine gives more false alerts since that would drive her crazy.

Silverado -- Thanks for the recap. 90% of the time my drive is 20 miles to work and back (with most of it on the highway), which makes me lean towards the RedLine. On the other hand, one of the things I love about the 9500ix is that it rarely has false alerts. Decisions, decisions!!

The reason I decided to try a V1 after my IX was because the false alerts were so minimal with my normal drive that I figured I'd might as well step up & try a detector with even greater sensitivity. My 9500ix is currently in a family member's vehicle and is perfect for them because they would NEVER be able to deal with a falsing detector; for that type of person, a 9500ix is the ONLY option, so definitely give your wife the IX, lol. Personally, I can sacrifice the extra false alerts in the city (as long as they're not overwhelming) for the additional sensitivity, and since I have X-band disabled for my area, even the "chatty" V1 can be quite manageable. Since most of your normal commute is highway driving, I would definitely say get yourself a Redline for the additional range; plus, it'll be ideal for road trips. It's always great to try out something different; after all, variety is the spice of life!

I used a 9500ix for about 9 months, and I agree with everything Silverado said.

Wife had the 9500IX and liked it then I gave her the Redline. She now *****es to me EVERY day that Redline falses too much. I am now looking at another STI R Plus for her. So bottom line if a lot of city driving then the 9500IX. If a lot of highway driving then the Redline
