i think you might find that it is simply procedure on how to operate a radar, use the switch just like you would on a handheld unit.

also long time ago, i think a lot of cops were afraid of radar causing cancer and then finally, the old radars (maybe the new ones too i dunno), made a lot of doppler noise when you left them ON all day long. today's ON is in standby mode and you release it when only when you need to.

anyway, i also think you might find that sometimes leo will go out with the intention of seeking only the really big fish. so in their process of observing the target speed first and then confirming with their radar, you'll find they simply don't have much of an opportunity to clock anyone.
A lot of LEO's won't post up on the side of the street blasting IO all day. They will be moving and when they notice a speeder, they turn it on and bam, instant on!

As Kensteele said, the doppler tone is piss annoying and all the beeping when locking in on a target. So, instead of running their radar all day they will release out of standby mode when they guess a vehicle is speeding.

So, why do some LEOs seem to prefer CO? I've seen CO in use while the LEO is driving and I've also seen it when they were stationary. I can understand using CO while driving but what purpose would it serve if they are stationary?

An LEO has the ability to turn down the volume of the doppler. They are however, supposed to "listen" to it for tacking purposes.

^ That's probably the best radar tutorial I've ever seen.

    that vid should be stickied.

No annoying buttons to press. Always have a speed when you need it.

    Default Excellant Video

    http://www.cooleysllc.com/radar101.html

That is an excellant video, that video should be included with every radar detector purchased, it explains a lot and demystifies just as much. If I was a cop there's no way I'd listen to that pointless noise from the thing all day long, I'd have to mute it if possible or rip the speaker out of the thing if mute wasn't an option.

After seeing that video I'll also never just accept another speeding ticket again unless I know I was dead wrong when it was issued to me. There's just as much of a guess involved for them to accurately use the thing as there is a guess for us to accurately use our detectors against it. I do have enough confidence and trust in my local law enforcement to believe they would never purposely make an error, but there's a pretty big possibility that an honest mistake could easily be made, I'd even ask the judge to view that video while fighting the ticket in court, because I doubt even the judges would be aware at what the margin of honest error could be as that video makes clear.

It helps so much when you know what the LEO is seeing, hearing and feeling. I tried to incorporate as many useful links in my post about the 9500I. I know how hard it is to find product specific explanations, or even useful general ones.

awesome vid. makes me aware of what they see, and also aware of my surroundings when i do get hit and get a ticket. maybe i was the one targeted. but if im in a group, hard to tell, and thats my case in court.
