I was told you should let the Self Cal run, once it returns to normal, then turn it off.

Let the Self Cal run through without turning it off. Otherwise, the calibration won't complete and you'll likely get Self Cal again when you turn it back on.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

Or possibly foul up the CPU and/or whatever memory it is using? Not sure, but seems better not to tempt fate.

Aust3333, hope you understood my post the right way -- wasn't disagreeing or trying to one-up your post.

(The radios (tx/rx) in my vehicle and the other scanner gets the same caution. Power up after vehicle is running, power down before.)

I did not get the service plan either and one month out of warranty I got the dreaded Service Required message. I have done the only thing I know to not see the "message". I paid $50 to have it repaired and I sold it the day after I got it back from the factory. Done and no more messages. I cannot decide now what to get. I have an old Passport 5000 for $35 off ebay until I can figure it out. I have been leaning toward V1 when I feel all the revisions are finished and issues worked out.

PS The Passport 5000 is really pretty good!

My mates vector995 started getting Self Cal 4 meesges, then Service Required.
He never left it in the sun.. Always plugged it in after the car was turned on and unpluged it before turning it off.
Maybe some of us are just unlucky?

I have had my 8500 X50 since May 05 and got SEFL CAL once and it happened within 10 seconds of startup. Escort has told me that indeed starting the car w/ the detector already on can cause a voltage spike in some vehicles so it is better to turn the thumbwheel off until the vehicle is started and the electrical system stabilizes. I have been doing this ever since, and no more SELF CAL messages (knock on wood).

I talked to Chad at Beltronics about this, and he said if you get 3 or 4 Self-Cals, then the next message will be Service Required. He also said that a reset to factory defaults will erase the # of Self Cals from memory.

I guess you can do this to avoid the Service Required message, but if the detector really does have a problem you should probably send it in.

Even though I believe Chad is one of the more knowledgeable persons at Bel, the self cal messages and service required messages I think is due to some sort of power issue. I really think Bel is just speculating as to what the real problem is.
