    Default Purchasing a new 8500 x50

I am new to the world of Radar detection. I have placed an order for an 8500 x50. My question is since this radar has been out for so long will it still make a good choice for today market of radars. I didn't want to go over $300 and this is my first detector.

I think most people here would agree that the 8500 is still a great detector. I have never used one personally, but I am thinking of picking up one of the refurb units as a backup detector. I am sure someone here would be able to give you more specific info if needed, but for the price range you want I think you will be just fine.

The refib 8500 is a very good detector. IMO I would buy it used and save the money or I would make the jump up to the next level of protection. The refib comes with the S7 antenna while the new 8500 X50 comes with the M4 antenna. Some prefer the S7, new is not always better.

The best detector for you depends on your driving style, area (threats), and your personal preference. If you want to spend a little more I would look a the Redline or V1. Remember that you get a discount at Radar Busters because you are a forum member. Read up before you buy.

    Good luck.

Yes, the 8500 is still a great RD. I have a older one that has the S7 antenna and it's still a top notch unit. The newer M4 ones you lose some off axis sensitivity, but if it's on axis you get slightly better range than the S7 based ones.

I had a awesome instant on save with it a couple weekends ago.

I appreciate all the replies. I am expecting UPS to drop it off tomorrow.

I have been researching online and it appears the laser is the most common by Maryland state police. At least that is what I am seeing on various forums. Where I live (near Ft. Meade/NSA) police presence is all State and military police. My normal daily commute takes me on one of the major routes and police are always around. I figure one of these days I was going to get caught napping if I don't have something that can keep me alert to speed traps and the like.

The X-50, just like any other RD, will not save your a$$ from laser. It MAY just tell you that you got hit. Let us know what you think of your M4's ramp-up.

Well my package came and while I was at work. I had been looking forward to this all day. The problem is that when I opened the box the wrong item was in it. A baby monitor. I called customer service and they are sending me out the correct item but it's not shipping until the 16th. This really sucks. I am hoping that is a huge over estimate.

I bought the radar through macy's because I can take it back anytime if I don't like it. Plus I put it on my macy's card. This is an expensive purchase for me. So needless to say I am bummed.

Anyway I will update my fail or success with the performance of the detector once it gets here. I am hoping laser isn't all they are using out here.
