I do not see how it can be any cheaper. They have had people in prisons do plates for years. Infact they were originally done raised. So there is no extra cost to it...

I'm thinking the writer got the thrust of this story wrong. I don't understand how raised numbers themselves would make any difference. I bet it's just like the Cr8apl8, in that it's the lack of retroreflectivity that is the issue.

My State went to flat plates a few years ago! Thought at the time they were just cheaper to manufacture than the old raised letter types. The newer flat plates are also way way less shiny/reflective than the old glossy raised letter plates.

The other part of that story which is kind of puzzling is that people over there can buy and display 3rd party license plates on their vehicles? Seems strange.

I know that camera recognition software needs to be set up properly, but there's gotta be some kind of universal character recognition software? Here in Canada we all have raised letter plates and get plenty of photo tickets in the mail. Also, I saw a story where in Europoe somewhere they're putting spaces on plate characters so the software will have an easier time recognizing and ticketing offenders.

Nah, fake Euro plates are available everywhere. They're all over eBay. Lots of BMW posers in the US buy them for their stupid cars.
