is cobra the best 'second tier' detector?

I would have to say no. Cobra seems to have a very large variation between runs. Some people that had XRS9700's said they would give a max of 7 seconds of warning, some have said that they gave a good 20-30.

Whistler seems to have more consistant quality, but they do false to other detectors quite a bit.

If the source is stationary that will work....
If its a cruiser using constant on Ka coming towards you; you would actually have to reverse the car to get 30 seconds of warning.

That was a friend that I sold an XRS9700 to. The radar was stationary and on a fairly flat road. I personally saw it give about nearly 10 against oncoming Ka moving radar. Maybe it was just a factory freak.
