The next generation of detectors...what do you think?

Let's take this a step further. If the radar detector could send events to the computer (Ka band, 35.505, signal strength 1, etc) - everything that it detects, and I could analyze it with a software program I code, I would buy that instantly.

How about nothing exotic. Just give me a 9500ix with the m3 antenna, spectre invisibility, a rear antenna and directional notification in the form of arrows or otherwise. Don't really need a remote detector if I have that.

Just head into town, there are a bunch of those working at various cross roads. Might be able to convince one to come with you for less than that....

Easy, get gps transmitters, add one to each police car in your area and have a laptop in your car showing their current locations

haha That would be something else..maybe this is unrealistic but i'v wondered with the detectors that are paired with a gps screen ,if it could show a dot on the map where the radar/laser is shooting from..

@Kwaz.... nice thread.

First, since I work in the software development industry, I understand the importance of developers being able to protect their intellectual property.. that said, ALL detectors should be software/firmware upgradeable by the end user. This should be no different than flashing the firmware on a computer's motherboard. User accepts the risks associated with flashing. You brick it, you pay to have it fixed. A risk I'd be willing to take. Alternatively, through software, you could be given the option of backing up your current firmware prior to flashing. This alone is top on my list of features.

In addition, manufacturers could also produce units which run on open source software. Linux for radar? I am not taking about hacking here. Radar manufacturers could charge more for this unit upfront if they wanted. The open source community would eat this up. Look at the positive results Pro-Mod tuning software has made on the automotive industry. Some of the best products are open source based, and driven by enthusiast like us.

Other features I'm interested in appear to have been mentioned or discussed in this thread. Full navigation and GPS integration, modular components which can be purchased or integrated seperately. Trapster and Radar Active is living proof that radar detector manufacturers have no business charging subscriptions for redlight camera or enforcement databases. GPS is free, we are surrounded by it. Don't want a user driven database, then provide a subscription as an option. Having a choice would be nice.

I'm sure I haven't thought of everything, nor do I have all the answers, but I would love to see the next generation of detectors based on this or a similar model.

1. Keep a lower end line of windshield based detectors (user upgradeable)
2. Offer a mid range line that includes 1 or more head units with some degree of modular integration
3. Offer high end units which include full integration capabilities (the new iQ takes a stab at this)
