If you can keep it in one place and not move it, it should work fine. However, if you move it any, you will be driving in circles a lot trying to calibrate it. LOL
If the bracket stays in the same place on the windshield, removing the unit from the bracket will not cause you to re calibrate. Only if you move the mounting bracket will you have to recalibrate the compass.
I tried this. For some reason it didn't work. Even when my bracket was left in place the Whistler was stuck in the South direction.

I took it back to Walmart and bought the 78se from a dealer because the blue LED was easier to read. The direction wasn't really that big of a deal because all of my vehicles have the direction built in.
